..And you KNOW this, somehow...? or is it just an assumption based on a possibly imperfect understanding of the mechanism which drives the odometer gears?
Perhaps instead of promoting unsubstantiated stuff on someone's 'for sale' thread, you could either substantiate your assertion that yours doesn't do this, or at least post some indication that you're prepared to at least entertain the notion that not all misaligned digits add up to a dodgy odometer.
Tell you what, you post a little video of your last digit -either on the trip meter (easier, since it's a tenth) or the main counter (they both use precisely the same mechanism, so it makes absolutely no difference beyond the fact than one happens ten times faster) and I'll eat humble pie. -Right here.
I will of course have no other option but to confess that you're right, and I was wrong in asserting that NOT all 951 odometers, -not to mention all VW/Audi from the same era- do this.
Alternatively, perhaps you'd consider the fact that you see 'moody' odometer readings all the time because you weren't yet aware that this is how VDO odometers (and several other mechanical counter designs) naturally do this... and you'd assumed that some 'Arfur Daley' character must have given the car a haircut...
It's easy to make a false assumption, but if it causes genuine harm to another person (by possibly erroneously calling into question the value of what they're selling, in this instance) then please at least consider that it would be best to be COMPLETELY certain of the facts.
I'll wait for the video.
-In the meantime, if you'd like me to post a video of mine behaving EXACTLY as I describe, let me know. -I have no doubt that others could do the same.
in the meantime, watch your odometer. -I way this without any trace of sarcasm or meanness, but I wholly expect that you'll be surprised to observe how it operates... unless 952 odometers were constructed completely differently.
I could be wrong... maybe there were some alternate mechanisms out there that I've never seen in person which didn't do this... but I can say that mine does it, and all the digits align -perfectly- when they're displaying the same value.

This car is documented. There is no mystery. There is no drama. No gnat crap in the clutch pedal.
Its a 1 owner, low mile cream puff. The right buyer is out there.
Keith calls it well.

Because it really has 500,000 miles on it...I restored it down to the last detail to make sure that it looked like it only had 38K miles on it. This is what I love about forums, the unlimited supply of know it all ASSumptions is comical![hiha](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/roflmao.gif)
Took a few shots this morning, apparently I have been driving it or something because the mileage keeps going up?
Oh, wow, look at that, the 3 is not lined up...must be a 4 coming up for some reason?

For those saying that misaligned digits means it's been screwed with, have you ever held the mechanism in your hand? Because what you're saying is more or less impossible given the design. It's the nature of the beast, stop spreading inaccurate information.

Not many nines among those Lart...
But... look at that last one.

Notice a pattern?
If they were nines, the threes would be higher.

Oh, hey Lart... do you have a 180MPH speedo by any chance? -I'm about to put the Rennbay drive gear in mine, and I'm worried about breaking the needle off the spindle. -Would be good to know if I have a backup, in case it all goes wrong.

I implied I would investigate further if I see uneven digits on a odometer, I stated my odometer is not misaligned to that extent, I also implied I've seen plenty of odometers that have been tampered with, quite why you saw fit to set off on an extended rant I have no idea.

You say 'implied', most people -I expect- read 'insinuated'.
Again, How do you KNOW that the odometers have been 'tampered with'? -I did ask that at the beginning of the 'rant'.

Please, will somebody just buy the car before Largeandturbocharged puts any more miles on it. This car has had about 1500 miles put on it every year for the last 25 years and now Lart is adding 1000 a month. Please, anybody, just buy this car so it can stay in a garage. Maybe the price will drop because it will "soon" be a high mileage car :-)

You seem to be very defensive, however I'll indulge you a little, I owned around 12 mk1 Golf GTi's and a couple of mk2's during the 90's, when I saw finger prints or scratches on the odometer barrel I suspected they didn't come from the factory like that, I took a VDO speedo apart and it's very easy to alter one digit, if the clockers wore surgical gloves and wound the digit forwards rather than backwards it was harder to spot. I have nothing to hide and I'm not selling anything here, that's all.
