Post SFR 951 headers

We are now offering an affordable factory replacement header for the 944 turbo. We use proper slip-fit merge collectors which eliminate the need for the expansion joint on the number one runner. These merge collectors should be good for a few horsepower as well as better spool-up. We also finish the inside of the header for maximum flow. We will be offering these headers in 304 and 321 stainless. Prices for the 304SS headers are $795. 321SS headers will run you $995.

Nice to see someone offer a 321SS system. Much better than 304.

Ok Tim,

Really, your work never catches me off-gaurd, Ive been with you, I know what you can do. THese crappy looking headers in the picture, of course, they are just your prototypes...right? I mean, whats with those flaky weld joints, those beads are as big and lumpy as the hooters on a ten dollar hooker!

Jeeze, the next time you post anything like that to this truely worthy crowd, you better not do it with hacked up work like that!

Were you drinking? Hitting the pipe? Maybe you ran out of gas???

I'm kidding!!! I love those pictures...and you are the man!!!!! Now, when can I line you up to give our race car another 15hp with your magic touch???? I want a four to one design, keep in mind the firing order, and exhaust energy between those....I don't know if equal lenght is the way to go, lets meet up and discuss a few options...

THanks for the pictures, they are great!

Nice work Tim <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
Quick question, did you ever think of building a replacement cross over pipe using v-band clamps and a direct bolt-on to a Garrett Turbine housing w or w/o a v-band on the turbine housing?
Making it much easyer to remove and install the turbo + more turbo's to choose from.

Anyways keep up the good work on bringing great affordable parts for the 951.

TurboTim- Those headers look great, i wouldnt expect anything less from you. Your work is always top notch. So when are we going to see some pics of that trick carbon fiber intake manifold installed in a car with the correct intercooler pipes. I cant wait to see it. especially the pipe that connects to that monster throttle body.

Keep up the good work <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hi,

What´s the difference between 304 and 321? Is it the quality of the material or?

Pannan,

$200 (995-795). <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Seriously though, 304 is a general purpose grade of stainless steel. 321 has a splash of titanium in it and has an immunity to something called sensitization. Sensitization is when carbides are created (by precipitation) at grain boundries in the stainless at temperatures of 800 to 1600 deg F (425 to 870 deg C). Just the kind of temperatures you get during welding and during normal operation (for an exhaust manifold)! Creating these carbides is done by stealing chromium. When less than 12% chromium exists, you are prone to corrosion. This is the ugly thing you don't want to happen.

You can correct the welding sensitization predicament by reheating the weldment to 1800 - 1900 deg F (980 - 1040 deg C) and then quench the part. But since you'll be operating the part in the sensitization temperature range, this won't help you then. So, you use a stainless like 321 that is not subject to carbide precipitation (sensitization).

321 is available in tubing form for just this purpose. That's capitalism for you.

...and that's about $200.

You're welcome. Not the kind of stuff you want to talk about with anybody else other than some Rennlisters <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" /> <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" /> <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" /> <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" /> My metallurgy professor would be proud that I kept the textbook and actually made good use of it.

If you did heating the system to 1800F the resulting system wuld take on the appearance of a well rusted carbon steel pipe.

The heat treat would be more likely to work with a 304L than 304. Higher carbon 304's are what got a lot of the early fabricators into trouble with interganular corrosion in the heat affected zones of the welds.

Had one that didn't want to honor the warranty until I sent him photomicrographs of the intergranular attack in the HAZ. Got my new muffler <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

We decided to offer the headers in 304 because B&B and GHL seem to have had good luck with their 304SS headers not cracking. Ofcourse the 321SS is much better. We also have an equal length replacement header that we are working on. I will post come pictures soon.

Tim,

I just counted 42 melt grades in our melt shop for 304. Talk with your tubing supplier, which you have probably already done, and see what they will guarntee for the chemistry.

Another great alloy out there is 444. It's a 17-19 Cr, 2 Mo with .8 Ti+Nb. But the fab costs would certainly go up.

Although it looks like your price is right in there with your new oferings. Need to check my headers this winter.

Thumbs up

Shazam! Nice stuff. Good timing, too, since my header has the infamous crack. Will these function just as well on an S?

Hmm, replace header, then might as well do cat-back or full exhaust. Is there a package price :-0 ?
