if you punch a hole in the top of the filter before unscrewing it, it lets air in and drains the filter...makes a much smaller mess

Canton make a nice cartrige filter that you can remove the top to replace the element. The body stays on and the oil in it that is easily siphoned out. I have one on my car and it is much easier to keep from making a mess.

ND, if you break the air seal and remove the drain plug, this is pretty much a non-issue. Also, the 964 oil filter is taller and fits, so it's easier to change...so I've been reliably told.

Way cheaper then running all the lines and fittings to a remote location
Thanks great find

I hear ya, I think with the correct punch and the correct location off the center, one should be OK .. I wouldn't drill it that's for sure ...

Not a filter relocation kit. a FILL relocation kit. Slight difference

On my 968,I punch a hole in the filter, then I disconnect the oil cooler line from the cooler, and it drains the filter. It's a big PITA to have to deal with the cooler line every time but it prevents a mess.

On the 951 the cooler line is not as easy to disconnect (big compression nut as opposed to 2 small allens) so I haven't tried it on that car.

On the NA, I just clench my teeth and watch that oil gush down making a mess. I always wanted to drill and tap a drain hole on the side/bottom of the oil filter housing for draining out the filter... but I'd need some way of routing the spillage away from the engine parts. A brake bleed nipple would be the best, but I'd need a machinist to drill the right kind of hole for that. Still, it would probably be worth it.

had to go check this out for myself...

I found

http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Pors...RP-25-484.html

But that's the damnedest thing... I swear they had an oil filter relocation (looked similar though, so maybe I mis-read), and it put the spot right where the fuel lines would go on a late Turbo... weird.
