Sorry to hear about the wreck. Glad everyone is ok!

I get to start the insurance dance today. He/his insurance is on the hook for all the damages. He told the cop he was looking down at his GPS and never saw us stopped in front of him. He is 100% at fault. There is a check in my future, it's just a question of how big it will be. As long as it is fair value for the car and everything I just put in it I will be happy. If I need to, I'm going to be giving copies of all my receipts to his insurance company to show how much I just put into the car.
Major advantage to negotiating well is to not be the one in greatest need. There can be where the insurance company needs you to settle more then you need them. Be in no hurry.
I do hope you are thoroughly checked by the Doctor. Old wounds have a way of re-surfacing as we age.

The guy who hit me has nationwide insurance. Has anyone dealt with them before?
The insurance adjuster came out to see my car yesterday morning. He was fairly helpful. He deals with repair situations but if it is going to be totaled, he passes the claim on to another person. I think he believes my car is worth more than it is(I hope he is right). He knows that it will be more expensive to repair just because of the seven letters in the name but he seemed to think that it might be fixable(I think he is in for a big shock on this one).
I gave him a stack of copies of the receipts for the parts I just put on. He asked me what I thought the value of my car was and I told him $15,000. I didn't say if that was including the new parts or not. I figure $15,000 is a good starting number for me to negotiate from.
He said they start looking at value based on local cars for sale from autotrader and such. There are only two 944 turbo's on auto trader that are local(100 miles or less) to me. One has 100,00 miles and the other has 158,000 miles. The 158,000 mile car has a listing price of $11,750 and the 100,000 mile car has a listing price of $55,000(not a typo, 3 liter, 550 crank hp, etc, etc) for an average of $33,375. Yeah, I could go with that number.
Even if I go out to 500 miles the average only drops to about $17,000. I'd be happy with that number too.(plus parts of course)

What would need to be done to put the new turbo parts on an S2? Is that a simple process or very complicated. I know I would need to run low boost due to the higher compression ratio. Would my M-tune MAF system work for this kind of application?

The 8 valve turbo stuff, (intake/exhaust manifolds among other items) will not bolt on to the 16 valve engine. Someone with more experience with this may chime in, I have never tried to fit a turbo under the 16 valve intake, but it does not look to me like there is enough room to do that either. If you change the head to an 8 valve head from the '89 NA, you have a shot at swapping the stuff over, but the pistons are not really designed for the 8 valve head. It would be easier to transplant the drivetrain entirely and make a few wiring changes if you find a nice S2 and want to go that route.
Personally, I would try to find another 951 and swap your nice stuff over and sell what is left over. That would be a lot less work, and you can spend the time saved with your wife. Just my 2 cents.

So here is their initial offer.
Owner Retain
ACV = $8,119.00
Additional Considerations + $0.00
UPD Amount = $0.00
UPD Applied - $0.00
Subtotal ACV = $8,119.00
Sales Tax 9.30% + $755.07
Tag/Title Fee + $13.50
Subtotal = $8,887.57
Deductible - $0.00
Salvage - $830.00
Net Settlement = $8,057.57
An $830 buy back amount is nice but the rest is pathetic considering how much has been done to the car.
Looking at autotrader for cars with in 500 miles of Phoenix finds 8. Only 1 of the 8 could be bought for the number they are offering. The prices are mostly around $12-18,000. There is one where the owner is asking $55,000 but we all know he is high as a kite if he really thinks he can get that. None of them have brand new engines, trans, etc.
My response was along the lines of, "So I have to buy a car that is not comparable to mine and then swap my parts into it. 8 grand ain't going to cut it. Try again fellas. Start in the high end of the $12-18,000 range and we can talk."

That is a pitiful offer! Just keep in mind that you are the victim here, and you don't have to settle for less that is rightfully owed you. This may take time, but it is their best interest to settle with you and get you off the books.
Have you received a repair estimate? Once they see that number, and you mention "diminished value" under your breath...they tend to swing in your direction a bit more. Just keep in mind how insignificant ten grand is these days. When I had my battle (for 7 months) I just kept in mind that these folks are paying out $40K a pop every day for soccer moms out there killing Tahoes and Suburbans!

Eric,
Careful setting your initial position too low, especially in a position of strength as is the case here. If you meet somewhere near the middle of $17k and their initial $8k offer you will be disappointed.
Show the documentation of other, almost similar cars for sale. Add in the costs of your recent upgrades (those that add value to the car, not simply maintenance items), and present that. You're probably close to $20-22k, maybe more. That would be a better starting point.

Yeah, but how many of those sellers asking $18k are actually going to get it? Answer = zero
We all love these cars and no doubt yours is an excellent example of one, but unless it's a low mileage, concours silver rose turbo s, no one is spending $18k for a 951.
I definitely think you can get more from the insurance company than $8k and hope you get $17k out of them but I think it's more realistic to get $12k...
