Post Center Force Racing Clutch (Danno)

Hey Danno you gave me a site that sold Center Force Racing Clutch kits for a reasonable price. I have since lost that website and have searched all over yahoo / lycos to find this place again! Can you please help?

Thanks

I think Bill in Gilroy found an even better deal for less than $1k I think. Was it Powerhaus? Bill? Enjoying our new car?

New to the list but a long time 951 owner and list reader. Anyway, I am considering a clutch replacement myself; however, would it be correct to assume that you guys recommend Centerforce over Sach? Is the Centerforce clucth the best setup for a modified 951?

Thanks

DLR, Centerforce is pretty much the best you can get with off-the-shelf parts. Check out these recent threads:

Just got off the phone with my mechanic that I ussualy bring it to for big jobs I can't do(clutch, t-belt). He quoted me $1750 installed for a clutch job if I bring my own clutch kit in, and $2300 if I use their "Cup" clutch kit installed. Sounds a bit high to me when I had the clutch changed at the dealer in my other 951 ($2050 out the door)?? Anyone else know a good place in the Grand Rapids MI area, or Toledo Ohio area that does clutch jobs?

Centerforce says the list price is now $1584.95 for the turbo and $815.95 for my S2, yet the site you mention sells them for MUCH less, only $398.15 for my S2... and they say retail is only $572.95 for the S2 and $1140.95 for the turbo. So much for list prices

My local shop says the biggest problem with the Centerforce is the heavy weight.

Sorry for the late responce, I was in Las Vegas this week and had difficulties connecting the laptop to the net. Boy talk about a NON-Porsche town, I could not find a single turn anywhere. Nothing but straight roads.

As for the centerforce clutch, I got the dual friction disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, t.o. bearing collar, pilot bearing and rear main seal for $999.00 from Windward Performance (800) 642-1348. Shipping from Vermont to California was $46.51. Windward was great to deal with!

I had a local automotive custom machine shop, bead blast the flywheel, resurface the flywheel face, remove 3 lbs from the rear of the flywheel (leaving all 3 sensor lugs) and balance the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate/starter ring gear, all as one unit.

I did not use the rear main seal. I have found the factory (Porsche) seals to be superior, at a minimal upcharge. And trust me....you do NOT want to do this repair again, due to a leaking $3 main seal.

Konstantin,

Just looked at the site you posted. Be carefull, that is just the clutch and pressure plate. You will need all the other items posted above. I spoke to several vendors and those add-ons can bring the price past what you should pay.

The $999.00 price from Windward is a complete kit.

By the way, lightening the flywheel cost only $80 (including surfacing, etc.). I got quotes of $400 from the vendors, to purchase a prelightened one.

Hey Bill! Where did that shop remove the weight on the flywheel? I take it from the backside on that giant ring around the outisde of the flywheel? How's the car feel with the lighter clutch and flywheel?

Let me get this straight the DF248248 Center Force Racing Dual Fiction Clutch kit does not include all the parts to do the job? I will additonal need T.O Bearing, T.O Bearing Collor, Piolt Bearing, and Rear Main Seal? How much can these extra parts cost? Skip you there? I have a 87 944 Turbo and need prices on those 4 parts with shipping to 49307 zip.

Thanks

[quote] Hey Bill! Where did that shop remove the weight on the flywheel?

Danno,

We removed metal from the side that faces the engine. The outside portion of the flywheel is thick and then steps 90 degrees (at about the middle of the flywheel diameter). We started at the 90 degree step where we machined the most material. We cut at about a 45 degree angle, gradually reducing the material removed as we approached the outer diameter. We removed no material at the flywheel perimeter so we would not disturb the 3 sensor lugs. This proceedure removed 4 pounds (14.5 lbs to 10.5 lbs). The 14.5 lbs is the flywheel weight not including the starter ring gear.

[quote]How's the car feel with the lighter clutch and flywheel?

The engine rev's quicker and feels more responsive. I have not noticed any notchiness when shifting. I have heard people say that it can be a problem with lightened flywheels, due to the engine decelerating between shifts faster than the syncro's can keep up with. But I did not use the light alloy competition pressure plate that Centerforce has.

The pedal effort is just slightly more than the OEM pressure plate. In the stop and go traffic we get here in the silicon valley, the clutch will get a very small amount of chatter after a while, if I get lazy with the engagement. Probably due to the lack of the additional dampening springs the OEM clutch has. But it is those same springs that fail.

Overall I am very pleased with the Centerforce set-up and would recomend it highly. All that is left, is to see how it stands up in the long run.

Dan87951,

Centerforce DF248248 is only a matched set of pressure plate and friction disk.

As to your question of do you NEED the t.o bearing, collar, pilot bearing and main seal?

I think it would be very foolish NOT to replace these items.

The job of removing the exhaust/cv joints/transmision/shift linkage/central tube/heater hose/ignition sensors/engine ground/starter/clutch housing/clutch/flywheel, is not a job you want to do more than once every 100,000 miles or so.
