Great thread.....I am also considering upgrading (eventually) to either the 48 or 53 turbo.

Not to thread jack....but my question is: Would the 48 be too small if combined with 55# injectors and an M-tune?

To me, spool is a large concern as the power band in these cars is so small. Daily driving my V8 M3 I have power from down low, all the way to the 8300RPM red line!

That's the exact same question I have about the 48 and an M-Tune. I want a quicker spool but Rick's #'s with the 53 are impressive with more on tap.

if i recall Dave Lindsey said the difference in spool between the 48 and 53 is only a couple hundred RPM...for me a no brainer

I had watched youtube vids of the gauge display on various 951's while driven in anger. When i first had the turbo installed it was lazy building boost, again my fault as I only thought I had solved vacuum issues.

Now the boost gauge and the tach needle move very quick (like the vids)!

Fourth gear part throttle results in 110+ in a hurry. really i couldn't be happier with it.

Looks like clown posted some specs on a LR Super 53...I assume that's correct.

"Cool I run a super 53 (To4E 60 Trim StageIII 8 Hot) as well. Its the one I just got rebuilt. Sounds like we will now have very similar setups. Let me know how yours turns out. I am still waiting for C-Tune to arrive. Should give you a major kick in horsepower up from the K26 you were running. Are you going to take the PCV out and try that first"

Well there are a few different options for turbine sides with the LR S53 turbo... Specifically, I was/am interested in the spool difference between the Stg III and Stg V turbine wheels. The Stg V wheel is larger, however it is GT precursor wheel, and should be a better design.

When I talked to Dave about the stage III vs stage V or P-trim, he suggested sticking with the III for an otherwise stock motor. He said that besides pressure, the stage III moves a LOT more air (volume), so even though the PSI may jump as quickly as it would with a 26/6, HP & torque may not be any worse at lower RPMs because there is still plenty of air being pushed into the motor while the pressure builds. It sounds like going bigger than stage III without swapping out more components would start going the wrong direction in terms of benefit.

the whole range differes with a few hundred rpm each turbo, so when you make your way up the list, theres 1000 or more difference of spool with the s48 and the s75

I did several "test runs" in 4th gear...15psi by 3400RPM's every time. 17psi (my setting) by 3800.

My 26/6 was reaching full boost (15 psi lately) around 3200 in my seat-of-the-pants tests, but when I look at old dyno charts, peak torque was at 3500-3600. Sounds like the Super 53 will be right there at the low end, but add big benefits at the top end.

mine would reach 15psi at 2800 rpm, with stock exhaust,no cat,TiAL 38mm and a free flowing intake MAF ect

Well actually I bought the turbo used, took it apart, and measured it myself. All I knew was that it was a Garrett Hybrid of somekind. I was just trying to get Dave Lindsey to burn some chips for me and he needed to know what kind of turbo I was running. Took it apart and gave him the measurments. He said it was very similar to his Super 53. To this day I don't know where the turbo came from but I love it.

Quick Reply: super 48 turbo good? lag?
