Default Autothority stg2 chips - max boost?

I have the ASE stage 2 chips, no banjo bolt jet (yet), running with a LBE.

The boost protection/cutoff is kicking in at around 12psi. Is this right? Could it be that the LBE, which I have turned up to get that boost level is spiking? Shouldn't the chips be maxing at around 14 - 15 psi?

I just picked up a used jetted banjo bolt that I need to install. I'm curious whether it will make a difference in how the car runs.

APE chips shouldn't have any boost protection.

Also, I doubt you'll notice a difference between the LBE and jetted banjo. I know I didn't.

I am running the Autothority Stg 2 chips and LBE with stock old wastegate. I just put a boost gauge in and I'm running 16-17psi of boost. Dave at LR said don''t use the banjo jet with the LBE. I think my stock wg is about to give it up too!

Yes - DO NOT use the jetted banjo bolt with the LBE. One or the other. They both do the same thing (slow down the boost signal to the cycling valve)

I also would not recommend using the LBE to set boost. I experimented with that several years ago -- it gets very erratic above the factory set point of ~11 lbs.

hmmm

so if not the chips what is it?

Interestingly, I also have a just aquired Autothority MAF with chips that I installed and was getting 15 - 16 psi without any "cutoff" or seemingly boost protection coming on. I had some idle issues going on though (fixed and not related) and took the MAF off and replaced the chips back to the stage 2 chips...everything else on the motor is stock except for the LBE.

I worry about running lean with the MAF setup and hoping to get on a dyno soon to check A/F ratios and boost levels, etc...

I will not use both LBE and jetted banjo bolt

brrgrr,

what do you mean by the LBE getting eratic over 11 psi?

Im confused. You're using an ape maf plus ape maf chips with an boost enhanced instead of a jetted banjo right?

Sounds like you need to get yourself a trunk monkey!

Sorry for the confusion...I'm running ape stage2 chips, stock airbox, lbe and 3" exhaust no cat. The car runs good and pulls hard. At wide open throttle and boost at ~12psi it will violently cut off, like an overboost protection. If I turn the lbe down a little the cutoff goes away. I have an aftermarket boost gauge.
I previously swapped the stock airbox for an ape maf and maf chips and was then able to run ~15-16 psi without the stumble, pulls hard to redline...it's not as smooth as with the stock airbox though.
I just bought a jetted banjo bolt, used, that I haven't tried yet.
I really want to run the stock box with 15-16 psi.

You're sure the chips are for AFM ?

I don't know much about the APE AFM tune.

2 things I found:

1. It seemed like the LBE was not consistent above 11-12 psi - meaning 1/4 turn sometimes didn't affect it all, sometimes it raised the boost 3 psi.

2. Due to the nature of turbo spoolup (exponential) - If the LBE is set to anything past 12-13 psi or so, by the time the cycling valve gets the signal to open the wastegate - it will overshoot to a 15++ psi spike.

I'm not sure what is causing your cutout - I just would recommend you leave the LBE at the original setting (~11 psi) - If you want to improve your boost control pick up a LR Dual Port wastegate and ditch the cycling valve / LBE all together.

Thanks guys

I'll get there with the LR Dual Port wastegate. I have a core out of the car, just need to send it out and I already have the LR MBC waiting for install.

UPDATE

I've got a huge smile on my face while I type this...

I got the jetted banjo bolt today and installed, removing the LBE in the process. Just took it out for a test and did a couple of 4th gear runs at wide open throttle and the the car is running beautifully. It pulls hard and smooth to ~13 psi and holds the boost.

I'm so stoked right now. The car has never performed this well since I bought it. My guess is that by using the LBE as a controller it was causing this cutout issue. All it took was getting the jetted bolt, (thanks Lart!) that the chips are supposed to work with, installed.

I can't wait to get out on the track next month at Willow Springs!
