Intercooler Pipes
I am planning on Making some custom intercooler pipes for my car. What would be the optimal diameter? I am running a T04E/46 at fairly high boost pressures. I think 2.5 may be a little too big. I don't want too much flow, and have to pay for it in lag. Most of the sizes from the different tuners are 2.5 - 2.25
Anyone have any experience with this?

Well, since air is compressible, if there is alot of Volume, like PorscheG96 said, the pressure coming down the pipe from the turbo has to compress the air into the space before it is moved. And the less space to compress the better responce, you just have to balance that with flow.
Any opinions on 2.5 or 2.25 on my application?

2.25 should be plenty- heck the stock pipes are more than good enough for up to like 500+hp, i got polished ones cuz, frankly, they look pretty, plus i wanted to eliminate the old cracked nasty rubber piece coming up from the turbo to the pipe.

There is really no reason to have the turbo-to-intercooler pipe larger than 2.0" as the turbo outlet ID is less than 2 and the IC ID is very close to 2. Then you can use a 2.0" silicon hose at the turbo joint and a 2.0-to-2.5" silicon adapter at the IC. The IC-to-TB pipe has some different consideration because of the size of the TB. I used a 2.5" pipe because I could use a 2.5" silicon hose at the IC joint and a 2.5-to-3.0 silicon adapter at the TB. Everybody forgets to mention that with new hard pipe you will have less turns. Every turn will have a static pressure associated with it. So with less turns you can flow more air at a lower pressure. When the air reaches the throttle body it will again bottle neck and build velocity again. So you have to address the whole intake and remove as much restriction as possable.Once the restrictions are removed there is less pressure against the exhaust turbine so spoolup would improve.

Hey Andy-
It doesnt look like you have the banjo bolt included on the Turbo to IC pipe. I didnt know you could delete this. Are you running the stock CV? I am interested to see what you did there. I may follow suit. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I really like those IC pipes, Andy. They look like they would work primo from a flow standpoint. Your reasoning on the intesection diameters makes a lot of sense too.

2.5" stainless. 2.25 is fine with a stock turbo, and less lag is noticeable with them. My bigger turbo needed them, and needs a Lindsey intercooler too.
And yea, they do look pretty nice.
