Talking 944 Turbo Has No Power

I was running a drivers school this weekend and my 944T started misfiring after 3 laps and has no power. When I turn the car off and restart it the problem goes away but comes back soon. It feels like the comupter is going into limp mode but I am not sure why. The car will run fine but when you try to accelerate fast the car sputters and black smoke comes out the back of the car. When the car was doing this I could hear the fuel pump make lots of noise. It sounded like to was running dry but the tank is full. Also the computer is not giving and error codes. Anyone have any ideas what will cause this???

Have you checked your vacuum hoses. That sounds like a large one came off. Check around the IC pipes, blow off valve, or intake.

Yes I did check the hoses. The only thing that does not make sense is the car will run right for a couple of minutes then it start acting up.

I've had this happen before, the KLR goes into limp mode of some sort, and restarting the car fixes it. I even drove the car to my friend to read the code off the ECU, and only 1 code came up, "Low Boost". Pretty useless code =).

After about 2 years with this sporadic problem, I figured out a way to replicate it quite easily. I've got the Autothority chips with 7000rpm rev limiter. If I bounce hard off the rev limiter enough (ie doing donuts hehe) and the revs climb above 7000rpm, the KLR will go into no boost mode, limiting boost to 1.1 on the gauge. Shutting off and restarting the car fixes it.

I have no idea what kind of a failsafe this was, but the problem didn't go away until I switched boost control duties to my AVC-R.

i had the EXACT same problem with my car; it turned out that the KLR was causing the DME to overheat and also erroniously firing the cycling valve to prevent knocking that it believed was happening. I was fortunate enough to be able to swap the DME and the KLR with working ones in order to isolate the KLR as the problem... now the car runs like a dream.

what is your boost gauge doing sounds like overboost protection?do you have a banjo bolt restrictor make shure its not pluged or the waste gate is sticking causing overboost.the computer will pull back the timing and dump fuel if it senses knock thus the black smoke unburnt fuel

My car recently had the whinning fuel pump and black smoke with no power. It was due to a bad FPR. My wrench put a Gauge to the Fuel Rail and it was reading over 8 bar. The norm is like 2.5

Anyway I replaced the FPR with one for a 968. Car runs good and strong now.

there's a dme relay, which isnt the dme computer. the dme computer is against the firewall in the passenger's footwell. the KLR is also there... the dme relay isnt your problem.

"What is a AVC-R??"

Scott, the Apexi AVC-R is a modern high-performance version of the KLR. It's an electronic boost controller that uses memory and predictive logic in a closed-loop fashion to manage boost on the car. It's much quicker and more precise than the stock KLR computer. It also can vary its control of the wastegate to reduce turbo-lag and also clamps shut the wastegate at high-RPM to maintain max-boost as long as possible. It can also provide differential boost control of each gear so you can get the identical max-boost in each gear, or you can give 1st & 2nd gear less boost to prevent wheelspin.

More details here: <a href="http://www.apexi-usa.com/electronics_savcr.asp" target="_blank">Apexi Super AVC-R</a>

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone for the input. I am going to check the fuel pressure regulator tonight. I talked to Jason at Paragon and he said that maybe causing the problem also. Thanks Danno for the explaination on the AVC-R.

I replace the fuel pressure regulator and it took care of the problem. She runs great again. It also made the car idle better!!!! Thanks!!! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
