Cost of a 951 engine rebuild?
Just curious what it will cost when/if I ever need to rebuild my motor. I guess pistons are not always required - just rings and bearings?
Thanks,
Grant

If you do the work it will depend on how much while I'm in there stuff is added to the list, but can be done at a reasonable cost. Now if you pay a shop to do the work well..... labor charges will add up quick.

I'm not planning on doing the labor myself. How many hours are we talking about?

Labour will be minimum of 40 hours for a standard rebuild. If you are about to rebuild your engine, do not cheap out. It took my mechanic 6 months and required a lot of additional work (machining, resleeving a cylinder, overbore and oversize factory pistons, new turbo, MAF, etc.) and planning (I had it upgraded to 330 horsepower). But do it right the first time and you won't have any problems for the next 100,000 miles.

A rebuilt and upgraded 2.5ltr motor from Huntley Racing is $3500 for a long block. You can more details on our website: www.huntleyracing.com

How many track hours are these motors good for between rebuilds? The GT3 cup cars can last 50-60hrs...
I don't race my car, but I like to track it fairly often.

Understand that the above motor is a rebuilt stock motor with our 'perp-drill' process on the crank and a better headgasket (our new Full Metal Jacket gaskets). The crank will fix the rod bearing failure issue. The FMJ gasket will help to reduce the risk of head gasket failure. However no amount of motor prep will make up for a poorly running engine. If you experience overheating, detonation, run low on oil etc... you will hurt the motor eventually. That being said, these motor should last a very long time, street or track. But to add even more reliability you can go to one of our 2.8 ltr or 3.1 ltr motors which are designed to take track abuse continuously.

I have 78K and some track time, I am always scared about the rod bearings. with high miles, those become the weak link, and it's big labor to change them.

I had mine done for $3500 parts and labor. That's factory OS pistons, all machine work, bearings, gaskets, etc. That is extremely cheap though
I put on a larger oil cooler and an Accusump and have had no bearing problems since. I have a friend with almost 10 years of club racing on his '86 with the original rod bearings, he has been running an Accusump since the beginning. IMHO they "cure" the bearing problem.
The bearings will fail regardless of mileage if they are starved. The later cars fare a little better with the updated baffling and the oil level indicator light. Run them low on oil and you WILL kill the bearings.
Derek has some interesting ideas on the bearing failure problem. I have a copy of a dissertation he typed up about it somewhere.

Pegasus racing sells them.
I put one on my 86. On the non-ABS cars you can put it in the passenger side wheel well. It is protected by the liner. I ran a line to a Canton-mecca oil filter from the accusump. To do it this way you need the sump (3 quart elec.), the fittings(90 & 180), and the braided lines. For cars with ABS the ABS pump is in the wheel well so you will have to find another location. I guess you could remove the charcoal canister from the other wheel well and use that space.
