I know Mobil 1 syn is great for our cars but what about the Amsoil and Redline brands?

They are more expensive than Mobil One and can be harder to find. Mail order is pretty easy though. I have a race shop about 20 minutes from here so I pick it up.

I use 10-40 in my 951 and 5-30 in my Explorer. I also use MT-90 in the 951 transaxle. With Red Line 10-40 (vs. Mobil One 15-50) I noticed less valvetrain chatter at start up, slightly cooler coolant temps, slightly higher oil pressure, and less oil consumption on my 951. I did notice slightly more turbo lag going from the M1 15-50 to the Red Line 10-40. Red Line 10-30 would probably cure this, but it's very slight and only a racer might notice it. With the MT-90, I had a noisy LSD and that quieted within 50 miles. HTH

I don't have much experience with these in a 951 but:

I use Amsoil 15-40 HDD in the turbo-diesel truck. I go 10,000 miles between changes with 5k on the filters. My oil analysis' always come back clean and I could go longer on the oil. I know of some people that go 60,000 miles on the oil with proper filtration.

Just to let you know how important the oil is in the diesel engine- the entire oil capacity (15 quarts) is circulated throughout the engine every 4-5 seconds (~15000 psi). This truck is worked hard and I haven't had any problems. I also use Amsoil ATF in the truck and I immediately noticed it ran cooler.

In the 951 I use Mobil 1 15-50 and Redline in the transaxle. I might decide to play around later but for now I prefer the availability of the Mobil 1 and change it often.

I've heard nothing but good about the amsoil stuff...particularly in GL4 tranny cars with crappy synchros. I actually plan on going this route myself as soon as I change the tranny fluid the next time.

Hey, Flight_951, which shop do you pick it up from? I'm up in the NoVA area too, so it might be close to me also, and it's about time to do some fluid changing.

Thumbs up

Have used AMSOIL in all my cars since 1986! May cost a bit more per liter/quart, bet the dividends are great! Better gas milege, reduced wear on motor and drivetrain, great flow below zero and everything runs cooler!

I spend my fair share of $$ at OG, but you can't beat AutoChic for oil.

Flight951, using 10/40 in the 951,,,you say you noticed better oil pressure than with 15/50 M1? Did or would you try/recommend the 20/50? Just curious about the "south" slight difference in temps, not that VA doesn't get its share of hot days in the summer.

I'm about 30 minutes away in Reston. Some mail order places have free shipping, but you pay a bit for handling. Last time I was at OG I test fit a couple Recaros.

I thought I could do a bit better than Mobil One for similar money.

I don't use 20-50 conventional oils since I prefer a year round oil and synthetics.

Red Line 10-40 seems to be a good oil for my car and street driving. I know others here have used Red Line products at the track. The Red Line site has some good info about their products too. HTH
