Post Cross-post, FS: (Or Trade) '87 951 (price suggestions?)

I'm feeling the water while considering selling my '87 951. Hoping to get an idea from the more experienced on a fair asking price. I've only owned it 8 months.

The good:

Blk, Blk Leather
82k miles
17" Cup wheels W/ new Yokohama Es100's
Bursch 2.5" Test-Pipe (Cat included as well)
Guru Racing Stage 2 Map Kit W/ Programmer (AFM Included)
Lindsey Wastegate
Lindsey Bypass Valve
Lindsey FPR W/ Gauge
Lindsey Upgraded Fuel Pump
Lindsey Motor Mounts (Not Installed)
Manual Boost Controller
968 Mirrors
9xauto Cluster Reflector upgrade
9xauto Short-shifter, with new leather boot (SFR short-shifter in glove-box)
Kenwood 859 Deck, Boston Speakers, 2 8" subs from Scott Levy (Provide your own amp)
Alarm with 2 way FM transmitter and LCD remote

The Bad:

Both seats are cracked. Neglected by previous owners.

2 small cracks in dash. Very minor

Exterior: Misc dings, scuffs, etc. The car has been repainted in the past 3 or 4 years.

Bit of a vibration on hard acceleration. Haven't started to track it down yet, as its not noticeable to most people. A Porsche owner would notice it though.

Leaks a little oil, but nothing major.

I think the sunroof gears are stripped.

Rear defroster doesn't work.

Temp and fuel gauges jump a bit. Possible bad ground.

One stud on the downpipe is broken. This will be repaired shortly, although its not leaking. Or if you prefer, I'll knock some cash off and you can tackle it yourself.

PS Leak, add fluid about once a month

Misc:

New AC Compressor (AC is cold)

New swaybar bushings

That's all I can think of for now. I'll probably throw it up on Ebay. Any suggestions on a fair price? I'm not expecting to get my money back from the mods, but a small portion of it. I could return it to stock if requested. I've slowly been replacing, repairing, etc, but I think I'm ready to move on to something else. I'm not ready for 2 project cars, so one of them has to go.

Trade for a Yahama R1 (new) or anything else thats interesting.

Car is in Northern California.

<Note> Interior pick is before shifter upgrade and with old CD player.

I would say between 9-11k without knowing the car.

I will warn you though, you are going to regret getting rid of this car for an rx7. I have known many people that have owned both, and ALL of them favor the 951. The rx7 is just a cheap Jap imitation of what you already have. One of my X-business partners has one so I have MANY hours of seat time in them. You are also going to feel silly in 5-10 years when the rx7 is worth 3k and the 951 is selling for 15-20k.

Carter,

Interesting opinion.... I've had the rx-7 for over 3 years without one failure. They hold their value quite nicely and it will straight-up blow the doors off my 951 (and 99% of the other 951's).

well you asked for opinions so here goes....i wouldn't pay more than 8k for that car, but i'm picky... in my experience with my two 951s there is no such thing as a minor oil leak on a 951. if it really is minor and cheap to fix, do it before attempting to sell the car, as a buyer i'd be really turned off by the oil leak. wrt to your statements about rx-7s vs 951s that's odd imho, one of my coworkers has a 94, he just put a completely new engine in last year, before and after the engine swap the 7 has never been able to keep up with my 951. maybe it's a driver thing, i dunno.

Shaheed,

I agree with you on the oil leak.... I'm just giving someone a chance to pick up a project carm since I'm a bit tired of this project.

Off-topic, but....

A bone-stock rx-7 in proper running condition will run a 14.0@100 with an average driver. A good driver can pull mid 13's out of a stock car. I don't see many stock 951's run those types of times. $$$ for $$$ it's no contest. For $2000 you can have a Rx-7 running in the low 12's easily. They are mean on the track or autocross course as well.

Most rx-7 owners I run in to don't even know their cars are running like crap. The FD's have over 80 vacuum lines and one coming loose can make the car fall on its face.

Doesn't matter... I'm not looking for opinions on my rx-7, just on the 951.

Good God Almighty! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

I've always wanted a 3rd gen rx7, I think they're amazing looking, but hearing things like that scares the living crap out of me! Some day I'll have one. They really are fast fast little cars.

Yeah, under the manifold looks like a bowl of spaghetti on the rx7.

We live right up the road from Peter Farrell's shop, so I have seen LOTS of rx7's. I have embarrased at least 15 of them with my 951 =) My friend had 10k + in PFS mods! His is on his third engine. In fact, I don't know anyone with an rx7 that has the original unopened engine, as opposed to a friend of mine that has over 300k on his 951, with the engine never having been opened........not even a headgasket. He drives the car quite hard as he lives in the country and is a PCA club racer, this is his commuter.

The main problems with the rx7's is that when you blow an apex seal, which is akin to blowing a headgasket on a piston engine, you are looking at tearing the whole engine apart to fix it......as compared to an afternoon to swap a headgasket. The rx7's also run WAY too hot.

I do agree that you can make alot of hp relatively cheap..........but not for long =))

P.S. I ran a 13.2 in my 951 way back when it just had chips and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator &gt;$400 in mods!&lt; On crappy street tires!

Don't get me wrong.....I am not trying to slam the rx7.....I DO like them =)

Danger, think of the fact that PFS charges $500 just to replace the vacuum lines in an rx7.

Car looks good, but I can give some constructive criticism, as I am also in the market for a 951 and have seen many in the last 2 mos.

Get those seats fixed. Not sure how much it will be to get them stitched up, but its a turn-off, especially when someone is going to pay $9-11k. i have yet to see a car with seats like those in that price range...

Anyway, looking at that car, i would post it for $9000 and negotiate down to $8500 or so. I think $8500 would be fair, provided a PPI would not reveal some expensive repairs.

Carter,

Was that 13.2 with stock boost? I have yet to see a near stock 951 run anywhere close to those numbers, although I'm sure it happens. Some people with freak rx-7's have run lower 13's with a bone-stock car, but thats far from normal.

I don't see many 951's in the low 12's and I can't recall seeing any in the 11's.

I actually lived in Alexandria, VA for a while. Dated a girl in Manassas (sp?) and her mom babysat Peter Farrell's daughter. Still with me? Anyways, thats how I originally got in to rx-7's.

Modena 1,

It would probably be cheaper to replace the seats with a nice set of Recaros. It's not just the stiching, but the leather has been neglected for years.

I seriously doubt I would let it go for $8500 though. I could put the car back to stock and sell the mods and wheels for $2500. I've seen cars in worse condition sell for 10k plus. Not saying I would pay that for a car, but there are surely people out there who will.

Thanks for all the comments guys...

Matt,
No, it was NOT stock boost

It would definitely help the sale to recover the seats, but the leather kit alone is about $1200!! I don't think it would raise the value that much, so, not a very good investment.
