Engine rebuild update.
This is an update that people with rebuilt engines might find useful for comparison.
I have put about 4000mi on my engine since I rebuilt it and did a DE and a 4 hr cruise (each way) recently. The compression had been gradually increasing and is now at 149 PSI on all four cylinders. It seems to have evened up nicely after the DE. I am going to switch to synthetic oil now.
FYI - My run-in process was more like the traditional conservative (low rpm, mild boost) approach than the drive it like you stole it approach.
I will dyno the car again in a month or so but I expect that the figures will reflect the better sealing rings. Oil pressure high, coolant temperature is low and life is sweet

A rebuilt engine AND you are going with Big Reds? Life must be sweet, indeed!
Congrats!

OZ, great to hear. I plan to bring mine in the same slow, low boost approach on dino 20w50 for about 1000 very boring miles.
Keep us updated on the dyno pull. Also, snap some pics of the Big Red install.

Good to hear Oz, wish my car was going that well.
3700 miles on my new rebuild and turbo, as we speak I am removing the turbo to send back to Majestic, it blowing more oil than air.

"Does one use non-detergent oil for any period on rebuilt motors or new re-ringed motors w/ alusil blocks?"
"Yup, plain old dino oil, the less additives the better."
Yes, there was a guy who posted on the 944NA board that his engine took 4000-miles to fully break in and develop maximum compresssion. Then you can swap for synthetic oil.
David, so you had a turbo problem only? Nothing wrong with the engine? I'm finally putting my AMW engine this week (missed yet another track even this weekend). Just checking to see if there's anything I need to watch for...

One last bolt is giving me trouble and I will have the turbo out, the bottom bolt by the steering joint, it stripped on me
Did you go the 106mm route? If so it seems to take awhile for the rings to seat with the cromolly sleeves.

I have heard quite a few different opinions as to when an engine should be considered run in but to me the idea that an engine is run in when the compression stops increasing makes sense. I think the DE and the four hour drive to Sth Padre Island helped to settle things in. I'll feel a bit more relaxed knowing I will have synthetic oil in for the next DE. I have managed to pick up an Accusump accumulator as well so I will plumb that in for extra peace of mind at future DE's.
I'm looking ofrward to my second DE - it will be at TWS, it should be a hoot, especially if I have the big reds installed in time and the track wheels/tires on.
David, sorry to hear that you are having to pull off the turbo to sort out problems. I hope you manage to extract that last bolt without too many dramas.
