He will definately not break 175 if he has stock tire dia., tranny gearing or rpm limit. I dont care how much power you have, 175 and you are hitting the rev limiter. Horsepower will only get you there sooner. Ask me how I know.....

Back when Porsche ran the Hugo Boss car at Le Mans, it topped out at 175mph on the Mulsane straight while the 911 turbo hit 220mph. It finished 7th overall because it got better gas mileage and thus spent less time in the pits.

Your entry in the 3 Liter Registry thread says:

zagaone, 3.4, 16v. 108mm bore/93mm stroke; electromotive; 493rwhp/486tq @1bar.

Is this the same motor?

Where is the event? Most quarter mile tracks would require a helmet, rollbar and harness (and safety inspection) to go all out with 550rwhp. If memory serves, the old Fremont Racetrack (American Graffiti fame) required helmet and rollbar for all sub 13 second cars. Just food for thought...

In any event, may I suggest you crank up the boost.

1. Bigger diameter/lightest wheel/tyre combo that I own. Will use Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 295/35/18 on Kinesis very light wheels. Also have BBS on 295/30/18 Hoosiers(They are thinner and smaller diam. than the Yoko. Thinner 245 front.

2. Car as light as posssible. Right now at 2,900lbs. (It is a street car with a/c and full interior except for a racing seat).

3. Racing tape around the body gap.

4. Won't take out the outside rear view mirrors or any body panel. To much work disconecting wires. This is a fun event not professional stuff.

Anything else that might help improve top speed?

I heard people saying than in this kind of event a drop clutch launch is not that important. What is the best launch method to improve top speed at the end of 1/2 mile?

The car is a 3.2lt 16v/variocam with 550 rwhp at 16.5psi; 6spd stock 968 tranny with lsd.

Comments or ideas welcome

It is a new short block with a different sleeve & piston design, total seal compression ring and a smaller 3.2lt displacement with smaller bore (106mm aprox.) instead of the other block 3.4lt displacement. It is definitelly more efficient since it is producing around 50rwhp more and about same torque at the same boost. Like I said 551 rwhp @16.5psi and 503hp @ 12.75 rwhp on a Dynojet.

The car has 6pt belts, roll bar and will definitelly wear a helmet(required).

It has been raining heavily non stop since yesterday. Hope they don't cancelled. Will have to wait until tomorrow morning but is not looking good.

Angel, are you from PR and have Garrity build you a motor back in St. Louis a decade ago?

Yes. Woaa, that is ancient history!! At that time Garrity was planning in going to med school or so he told me, so he never built the engine. I sold that 951 over ten years ago and swithced to 968. First na and since 2004 it has been 968 Turbos.

Were you at a class with Garrity the day I went to visit him?

Wow, small world -- yes, we met there -- you were there to check out Garrity's shop, and had a pretty wild motor planned (at least for the time). Did you end up building your own motors or did you find someone else to build them? Garrity's back at it apparently, building a motor for George D on this list. Would love to hear more about your motor and see some pics!

The half mile event finally happened Sunday. I learned a lot being new to this kind of drag racing event. Airfield track was extremelly dirty. Did 143mph which was the highest of all Porsches there including Turbos, GT2, Gt3, Carreras S, Boxters. I was fastest than the real exotics: Ferraris, Lambos; CTS-V , etc. Fastest pass was a Nissan GT-R with 156mph. This were definitelly traction limited passes so the AWD cars had a huge advantage which showed in the top spot belonging to modified GT-R in the low 150 to mid 145. A stock GT-R did 125mph. The GT2 did 142mph. All in all I am very happy compare to my fellow rear wheel drives. Thing I will do different for next time:

1. Change spring rate in wastegate to be able to lower the boost low enough to get traction. My best mph was with the boost controller in low turned all the way down and switch to hi in 4 gear. First three gears were useless.

2. Put better tires. Used Yokohama Neova. Did not use the Hoosiers. I probably should have. Next time.

Couple of video links. Took the muffler out. Put a straigh pipe. Recomendations are welcome. Not a drag racing guy. More of a track guy.

Thanks

Angel

SO WAS THAT A TON OF FUN OR WHAT!!!!
Good job, looked like fun here. 140s in the half mile is crankin right along.

Gear referenced boost control would help, but you I expect the ET you gain really does not make a huge difference in terms of mph. In general MPH is tied to HP. The HP/MPH correlation holds pretty true even when lots of other driving alterations are made. The sticky tires should buy a few MPH by letting you get a bit more power down.

Texas mile March 2011 standing mile event, I made 13 passes - the mph difference < 5mph.
I changed: launch style, burnout/no burnout, intentionally short shifted one run, ran it to the limiter in every gear one run, missed 3rd gear on one run-OOOPS, various combinations with traction control on/off. Wind, temp, and humidity were the most impacting on mph.

For the half mile I expect that will mostly hold true as well.

I would have loved to see the faces of all the other Porsche owners. Before and after would have been great. I'd love to hear some of the comments you heard. To be totally honest, I am surprised none of the turbo rear engine cars beat you.

Nice job, that is an amazing feat at such low boost.

What I felt is that MPH will improve if I were to have better traction once already on the way. The problem I was having was that I was breaking lose the tires already moving pretty fast. I understand that spinning the tires at launch don't make to much of a difference. But spinning/breaking lose the tires onces ther car is moving pretty fast in third gear does not help mph. Is like in proffesional drag racing, once you spin the tires after launch you are done. I'm I making any sense? Needless to say people were scratching their head about the old Porsche, but I'm already used to that from the PCA and road racing events. Thanks.

That car is LOUD...I realize you removed the muffler. I'll send the video to Garrity. Great job coming in so well.
