Cat's out of the bag
well i finally took the catylic out today. it took me a lil lessthan 3 hours for the whole job and all in all bay lift and welding rods it cost me $8.00. and i noticed a big difference. the boost seem to hold a lot better and it builds up a lot faster too. for 8 bucks it's worth it. it's also a bit louder, it sounds like a ricer ( nothing against it ) but i kinda wanted a bit lower tone.
do you guys have any suggestions? the group buy on that muffler is nice, it's just out of my budget right now, if i could only make payments on it, i'd get it in a heart beat.
oh by the way, thanks to everyone forthe cut the cat tip.
doing the job myself and using the resources available, i was able to save 250.00( this was the price i was quoted by a local muffler shop)

Personally, I am going to run a high flow Random Technologies converter. Still good for the environs, and you can pick up some torque over a straight pipe.
Makes the exhaust a little more mello, and adds a nice tone.
If you were looking into an option... go that way.

I'd be interested to know why as well. I've heard they've had problems with Random Technologies cat's honeycombs breaking up under boost.
I ended up with a Dynomax 3" in/out high flow unit, but haven't installed it yet because finding someone I trust in Mississippi to cut into my GHL exhaust is a neat trick...
BTW: the Dynomax is only $110.00

This is just the discussion I need. After I use the stock exhaust to pass emissions I will be putting in my Fabspeed. I am debating about which cat to put into the new system. How much do the Random Technologies cost? Last time I was at their website they didnt have any prices listed. Thanks

Carl,
This has to be one of the best bang for the buck additions. I just put a B&B testpipe on my 951 and I also noticed a quicker spool up and more performance. The sound is very nice. I don't think rice at all, just a little deeper. Now everytime I take a left or right hand turn if I am not careful the *** end wants to come around. So far this is the only performance enhancement I have done, can't wait to do the chips. Enjoy.

Sorry for the delay.. pretty busy news day.
We have run the Random cats on our Supercharged 911 SC and have yet to blow one out, or burn one up. They flow very very good, and the price is not too bad.
I bought the one from mine because I was satisfied with the quality and gains we got on the 911.
I ran a Catco on my Talon, and broke the honeycomb in 2500 miles. It was tuned fine, so the cells just rattled loose.

Perry, is the cat you got part # 823033 for $246.05? This is what <a href="http://www.lightningmotorsports.com/random_technology.htm" target="_blank">http://www.lightningmotorsports.com/random_technology.htm</a>
says fits modified 3" exhaust systems. BTW that check for the LEDs is written, enveloped, and waiting to be sent Monday morning. I think I am going to buy a random technologies as well. Who would have thought that a cat would improve performance in some cases?

Say Ringo,
check your email, me and Scott will be working on his car tomorrow and you're invited if you want to meet up with a couple of 951 owners close by.
This will take place from 10am-on, on Sunday the 2nd......
Never thought there'd be enough listers to have a "get together" in my neighborhood..... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
"Ready or not, here come the boys from the South"
POD...... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
btw..Perry, haven't forgot you on the gauge panel, just too many irons in the fire and I know you aint hurtin for it....

Got a ways to go yet. Thanks for remembering Terry!!
For the cat... the 823033 is what I went with. You will need a 2.5" to 3" adapter if you run the stock downpipe. I plan on installing a 3" downpipe at some point, so that is why I went with this one.
IIRC, the body is 13" long, 17" in overall lengh, so you need to be careful where you place it in so the body does not hit the underside of the car.
I have the info at home on it. I ordered it about a month ago, and the 823000 series is on backorder. (guess it is the popular universal series)

I took a quick glance at Random Technology's site and they did have some interesting information. The idea of frontal surface area is important and the ceramic monoliths have made some big improvements. But they are still fragile and can melt down with a rich fuel mixture, fouled plug. We have a few in the lab that are nearly 100% plugged.
I'm guessing that Random is using a metal monolith though they don't say. The metal monolith walls are probably in the range of 0.0015" or less. We made one with 0.0015" in '88'.
So current technology with alloys such as Alpha 4 and the new items out like diffusion alloyed aluminum clad 436 should be capable of thinner cross sections.
Good news about the metal types is that their failure mode usually results in metal shards being blown out the tailpipe. Not nearly as prone to plugging.

Alan, rumor has it that you have installed a "fuel enrichment" switch on your TEC3 that will enable you to run rich at the flip of a switch to foul the cat thus blowing metal shards out the exhaust. Will you be using this feature to disable any competitors that are following you too close at your next club race???
