Default Torque Tube swap

How long does it take to do a torque tube swap? I am needing to have mine rebuilt. I think it is what is causing my noises. After replacing everything else its about the only thing left. Can this be done on jackstands.

6-8 hours your first time.

Yes, on jack stands.

Did mine along with a few other things on my buddies lift. It is an absolute bitch of a job.. and personally i would double the time estimate to 16+ hours if its your first time, especially on jack stands. It is basically a clutch job + lowering the rear suspension enough to slide the tube out.

Can you take the torque tube out without having to mess with the clutch?

Yes, but with the torque tube out you are 4 bolts away (just remove the bellhousing) from replacing the clutch.

I mean, you don't have to touch the clutch -- but you do have to unbolt the TT from the bellhousing. I would seriously recommend having at least one buddy there to help you. Oh and the extra-tall jackstands (you know, the 6-Ton ones).

If you have a 2 piece crossover pipe.......If not, you are still a long way from getting into the clutch. Its been awhile since I looked under his car, but IIRC he has a one piece crossover pipe.

They switched mid year from the one piece to the two piece system in 86, so it is a toss up on those cars as to which you have. After 86, 2 piece was standard.

I am almost positive your's is the one piece. I thought I had pictures of the bottom side of the car that would show it, but I guess not.

I could have sworn we talked about that, and I was thinking the same thing, one piece.

We discussed that it might be the torque tube, then after you heard the noise twice you said "Yep thats the torque tube".

TBH I'm at a crossroads with this car. This job does not sound easy by any means. Plus the tools required to take it out might be more of a task for me to undertake. I'm not sure if I will be waving the white flag yet. We will see what is said about the A/C.

Getting 28 MPG on a road trip is nice, but these last few big projects are big jobs and must add not cheap by any means.

Oh geez, don't quit now! Torque tube isn't that big of a job, its tedious but its not all that difficult. After you've already put this much money into the car, it would be a shame to see you stop now. That would sort of be like pulling a rookie mistake in the Indy 500 and hitting the wall on the last turn of the last lap. Don't be *that* guy.

you want to make sure it is high in the air, but not too high and make sure it is stable before wrenching!
