Default AN oil cooler fittings - O-rings or washers?

Was surprised at how small the O-rings were on the Setrab AN12-22mm fittings. And I've now found out first hand how time consuming this is to do with the engine in the car! Anyway, I've seen several references to using these fittings (and the links to the other stuff, like the ones Lindsey used to sell are all broken now), but I'm not certain which seal to use.

I would normally assume the O-ring. But as I said, it is small. There seems to be a recess in the factory fitting, too, and a chamfer on teh female side. But I'm not getting any kind of firm positive stop by putting in this thing, so I think the O-ring may be tearing itself apart. Before I go and take it back apart (and I'm only halfway done, still need to do the rear one), I figured I'd check and see what those of you running AN lines have done about that fitting - O-ring or washers?

I'm using the Setrab fittings with the supplied o-ring. It's been a few years since installing them, so I don't recall whether there was a lot of o-ring squish or not. Though, if there was something odd about the installation (no soft draw in the last half turn), I would remember it. There haven't been any leaks since installing.

I installed dual oil coolers a few years back using -AN fittings and don't recall using washers or o-rings. Pretty sure they go together without either.

Should have made it more clear in the OP that I was talking about putting the adapters into the oil filter adapter (block). Not sure if that would matter, but the question is specific to that point. I'm welding fittings onto an RX7 cooler that I am going to be mounting.

hmm...sorry, i don't recall for certain how it went together, has been a while.

this diagram may help you...http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/951OILCOOL.html

after seeing the diagram i'm thinking i may have used crush washers between the 22mm oil line adapters and the filter adapter on the block...this is on a '89 turbo which does not have the oil/water cooler on the block.

edit: per my post count, the devil is in the details. good luck.

I installed setrab -12AN fittings onto my oil filter housing and ended up having one leak when just using the o-ring. I had to go back in and install aluminum crush washers.
