Arrow is this a good deal?

a 1986 951, found in a junkyard, right side collision. needs new door, and new control arm. frame is good, runs good, good transmission, interior is perfect, it's really in good shape. they will toss in the door and control arm if I buy it... it has phone dial alloys. so, overall, I'd need to pay for a front fender, which I'm sure I can get at a different junkyard for cheap, and a friend to pull the dent in the rear quarter. It also may need a clutch. but other than that, it's perfect. so here is the price.... $3825.00. is it worth it do ya think?

If that's ALL that's wrong, it's could be OK. I'd plan to put a lot of $$ into maint. and replacement items.

How can you be sure that's all it needs if you can't drive the car? If you do your own work it could be worth it, otherwise a couple of small things and you'll end up spending much more money, fast.

I do my own work. I'll definatly look it over a lot before I spend the money. I was gonna have it put on a lift, and I was gonna look it over, a LOT. the clutch wouldn't be that big a deal, as I found one, a 20 peice kit for $767.00, and I was plannin on pullin the crank and cross-drillin it, so that would take care fo the bearing problem

Risky but if your energetic & can turn your own wrench why not take a crack at it? It's only money.

Yup,
I'd drive to Texas for the price difference.
You might have some odd maintenance issues, like rear wheel bearings, or other items that don't normally go out, but overall it's a sharp car for the price.
Worth asking some questions about.

Yeah. I'm gonna go back, and take a REAL good look at it. bring some tools
BTW, what's a good compression? I'm gonna compression all 4 cylinders, and test other things. what all are good things to check when lookin at a car like this? I sat in the car and shifted the gears, without it running, and it seems like the shift linkages are good. they are better than my 924...

Had I the money, I'd gladly take Silverbullet's 951...but I don't at the moment. I'm 20, and I'm tryin to find a job for the summer/next school year. and I figure, that a summer job with nothing else to put money to, I might as well get a nice car.

Anyway, what should I look for when I go back? thanks for the input

Just hate to see you buy a car thinking it's cheap, then once you get it road ready and add up the money spent <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Good Luck what ever you choose.

porschephile924, I personally would go for the sasilverbullet's car for $ 5500.00, talk to him maybe you can cut a deal, the other car condition is uncertain, changing clutch is not a easy task. Rennlisters support one another, just get a hold of the other guy and exchange thoughs, there is always a possibility.

It's definitely safer to buy a car from someone you know. That way, the actual condition is more certain, and if anything is not as described, you have someone to complain to. It's better to invest a little more up front on something of quality than to get a "good deal" that ends up being a money pit.

Listen to David.. he knows what he is talking about. I don't know of the milege on sasilverbullit's car but in the long run, it sounds like a better car for you...the "unknowns" can quickly deplete any savings you may get going the junk yard route...

Yeah...that's a really good point. I'll talk to him, see what kind of deals I can make...BTW, is it crazy to try and get a bankloan for that much? I was plannin on workin for a while before buyin the car, but sasilverbullet seems to need to sell it soon.

A bank loan isn't crazy, it's wise. At 20, the more loans you can get under your belt the better! It doesn't hurt to start small and intrest rates are real good so get at least 3 quotes before you decide whose paper to sign.

I was never able to get financed for an out-of -state car which may just be California B.S. ; I don't know, but I'd be interested how you do on this

I also really think you should at least take a trip to San Antonio to drive the silver car and see what you think. I don't think that junker is going anywhere soon for $4K.
