The first time I took the rad out it was on a friend's turbo, and I did it troublefree from below.
It wasn't until I was lying under my car last week, struggling to take the lower plate off and eventually asking my friend over the phone how I got to do it on his car that he told me he had previously cut the sides of the lower plate so it could be taken off from below.

I've found it easier to remove the fans and radiator (separately) out from the bottom. But I also don't have AC, Power steering, belt covers, BS belts or even shafts; air meter is gone, different oil cooler and lines, etc... so there isn't much in front of the engine.
While skimming through the thread, I didn't see this mentioned. The cooling system will see higher pressures after a warm shut down than during normal driving. This is due to the coolant pulling heat from the metal parts, but not having flow (liquid and air) through the radiator to reject the heat efficiently. This is why the OP did not notice a leak when parking the car, but found a puddle when returning some time later.
