Should I get a 951 and trash my 924S?
Hi people. I'm usually from the 924 board, but I figure I've heard so much about the people here, I'd take a look.
Anyway, I have a 1987 924S, and boy, does it have a history. I got it about a year ago, and I used it for a daily driver. Last october, I went on a road trip, and the engine spun the number 2 bearing.
so, we took it back, put a new engine in it. here I am, 5000 miles after the rebuild, and, it spun the bearing AGAIN! I rebuilt it myself, so there is no warranty. I had my work checked and Ok'd by a Porsche tech, the most experienced in Colorado, and he says it looked great.
I do track the car, when the damn thing works, but still, 5k miles, and it spins the bearing, something is wrong. I did break it in as directed by the Porsche tech.
as of now, I"ve run outa patience and money, as I've put over $7,000.00 in a car I bought for $3,000.00. I'm not wanting to rebuild it again.
so, I've got my eye on a shiney 951, but it's got a salvage title, and needs a front right fender, and a front bumper, and a front right headlight. it does run.
I'm torn between fixing the 924S, which has less track potential than the 951, but the 951 needs bodywork, which I'd try to do myself.
If I were to keep the 924, what's a good way to keep the bearing from eating itself again? I've heard that you cross-drill the crank, as accordance with Huntley racing's ideas. I've also heard of the accu-sump system, baffling the oil pan, and adding more oil. I know the adding more oil doesn't help. I changed the oil religiously, and added about 1/4 quart over the top of the dipstick.
I can find body parts for the 951 in junkyards, so that wouldn't be too much of a problem. but I would replace the bearings, and probably do what I would on the 924S, as in cross-drill the crank.
as Vaughn on the 924 site said, 'to make a small fortune in racing, you need to start with a large one' which I have found to be true.
Should I keep the 924S and rebuild it again? or, should I get a 951, do the bodywork, and have a car that can, and probably would, get much faster, and be better on the track (wider tires, better brakes). Thanks for the help.
P.S. is it worth it? is it fairly inexpensive to upgrade? Thanks.

Yeah, but I can't afford both. what I meant by trash, was either Part it out, or sell it. either way, along with working all summer, I'd be able to afford, and even fix up a 951. I have seen one with a front quarter and bumper missing, and I can get fibreglass front end parts to replace them for $800.00 at gt-racing, and wouldn't need shipping (I live about 40 miles away)

Hear the whistle and feel the boost then trash (sell) the 924S.
I used to have a 944(NA) then I tried out a 944 turbo from a friend, to make a long story short, following week I sold it and within hours I got my turbo, that was 10 years ago.

My first "waterpumper" P car was a 924S. What a great car. . . for what it was. I drove it for 2 years and took a $2K bath when I sold it - because it is that expensive to keep nice. But I dont regret buying a turbo with that $$ I sold it for.
I think if you are growing past the 924S in your quest for performance, sell it for what you can get (not much, mine was really fine and I only got $3K for it) and invest in a GOOD turbo, emphisis on "GOOD". A rat turbo is no bargain at any price unless it stays a rat or only goes to the track. Just multiply fixing a 924S by 2x as to what they cost to repair maintain.

Alright. here is the deal. I found a wrecked 951 in a local junkyard...I know...shady at first.. with the thought of a bent frame. But, I checked it out. It needs as it sits right now, a right front control arm, a right front fender, a right door, and some dents pulled outa the rear right quarter. It runs well. good and strong. it may need a clutch, which I'm not happy about, but I'll replace that when I put a cross-drilled crank in it. it's white, it has a perfect, black leather interior. the only thing I DON'T like, is the steering wheel, which I figure, I'll swap with the 924S. It will come with Phone dials. All this for $3,500.00. they will also give me a control arm with a good ball joint for $50.00 and the needed door for $175.00...so, overall, $3,825.00 for a running, pretty 951. then, I'll need a front fender, I am sure parts heaven or somewhere will have one for me...and I have freinds who could pound out the rear quarter, I'll paint it (It'll give me a reason to learn).
I now, have to try to sell the 924S. wanna buy it?
