From everything I've read you can use this simple formula to determine just how long LONG will be:

40(+/- 5) - Current Age = Number of years left before you can't focus on that &^%# bolt 6 inches above your head*

*The above has been hot rodded to be readable by the seeing impaired

Nope Greg, it's just you. I'm about 41 years old and still have 20/10 uncorrected vision.

Start your count down hit me at 43

40 to 45 is when presbyopia sets in for "most"

45 is when it started for me. Hard to take after always having perfect vision.

David, how about some custom Rennlist reading glasses??
We could have a group buy for us "mature" rennlisters.

Back in the mid 60's, a buddy of mines dad owned a Shell station. He had a pair of reading glasses made upside down so he could see what he was doing under cars on the lift. We thought it as great fun to laugh at him."Just wait you little bastards, your day is coming" was always his reaction. He got the last laugh.

Ive been -12 to -12.5 prescription for most of my life and im 27. My parents switched me to contacts at 14 or so, because the lenses were going to be $800+.

So bofocals arent that bad.... IMHO.

According to seewithlasik.com:

"If you are 40 and considering LASIK, presbyopia is an important concept to understand. LASIK has absolutely no effect on your eye's focusing muscles or on the crystalline lens, so it does not correct ordinary presbyopia. So, if you only need eyeglasses for reading, LASIK is not a good vision correction option for you."

I'll hang onto the reading safety glass link for you, just let me know when you need it...

Yep happened to me at about 46 and more at 48. I had about 20 - 10 vision in ny right eye until then and about 20-20 in the left. Now at 54 half the time I am cussing the car and half the time I cant see it well. My wife leaves the garage doors closed.

After 45+ years with no glasses, during the past couple years my eyes have gone way downhill and reading glasses are a must now. I used to think my wife was crazy for wanting the light so bright to read but totally understand now (don't need the readers if I'm outside on a nice day, for instance). This has become one of my biggest obsticles for working on the vehicles these days unfortunately... Oy Vey!

Probably no difference but I like the looks of these towards keeping them on my head.

Ha. True the vision problems are an irritation - what really gets me is buying new super-quality widgit and then thinking I need to put this in a special place so I can find it easily; only then to find that there is already one there.

"Dad, I counted them, you have 9 ball peen hammers" What is up with that? ...Bruce

I've ordered a pair -- the bifocals were an excuse to finally get a decent pair of safety glasses. The ones I got about 10 years ago with a garden tool fog up quickly and destroy most visibility anyway. The bifocal part is probably good for magnification even if you don't normally need reading glasses... who hasn't had to get a magnifying glass out from time to time to try read/decipher some obscure sequence of letters/digits on some ancient (and now dysfunctional) part? Well, that's my excuse anyway. :-)

I am 20/15 with contacts, 20/200 without and I am 19! I went several years being blind before I figured out other people could see what I couldn't see at a distance.
