Help me pick a turbo?
Hi all,
I'll soon be in the market for a bigger/better turbo, but honestly, I don't know enough about them to choose wisely. So, I figured I'd ask your more seasoned advise.
Here's what I have:
2.5L with stock internals
3" stainless exhaust from the downpipe back
Tial 38mm wastegate
Vitesse MAF and chip
3BAR FPR
#83 injectors
LR MBC
Evo Motorsport adjustable BOV
K26-6 @ ~15psi
Now, this setup is fun and all.. but it's not quite where I want it. What I'm hoping for is 350-400rwhp that is very streetable, reliable, and with much faster spool-up than I'm currently experiencing.
So, basically, I'm looking for the turbo that will truly bring the most to my car, and the overall "fun-to-drive" factor is far more important to me than the exact hp number.
What do you think? What are my options? Is there anything else I need or should do in addition to a turbo? Is my goal completely unrealistic?
Thanks for your input,
-Dave

Mine It's actually a quick spooling turbo that will hold 19 psi+ to redline and is about as bolt on as you will get for a Garrett dual ball bearing turbo.

So you want a turbo that will make 350-400rwhp and have much faster spool up than a K26/6?
That’s like looking for a lite beer that tastes great….

Without head work and a cam I doubt you'll see 400 rwhp on a 2.5 unless you run crazy boost and 100 octane. One my first 951 I had a vitesse stage 2, lindsey wastegate, 3 inch exhaust, lindsey level 1 head work and at 18 psi on pump fuel I put 342 to the tires and that car was a beast.
What size wheels and tires will you be using? getting power to the ground is important too.

I appreciate the offer. I hope, for your sake, your turbo sells before I'm ready to buy... I have to sell a car first. Unless you know someone who wants an '85 Supra...
Thanks for the reality-check. I had a feeling...
I've been reading a lot, just not sure how much I'm understanding. On the plus-side of things, I've definitely learned enough to know that the GT42 my buddy recommended is a bad idea...
Thanks for the input, perhaps I'm being a bit over-zealous. I just want the 951 to be faster than my E39 M5.. which weighs 1000lbs more..
I was worried about that too... I've got Fuchs, with a 245 in the rear...
so, all that said, what is a more reasonable goal?

You have a good foundation with the Vitesse MAF and chips and the 83# injectors are probably overkill for you power goals, but thats ok. I would upgrade the fuel pump to handle the added needs. As for a turbo, I went with a Lindsey Racing Series 65 "P" trim with a #8 hot housing. I would reach out to either Lindsey Racing or John at Vitesse Racing as they sell bolt on turbos that produce big power.
Are you running a piggyback to fine tune the car? If not, get one. Also get an Air/fuel kit to monitor that. A lot of people use Innovative kits.
The 245's will break free through 2nd gear and possibly into 3rd.
As for power output, it all depends on the tuning. I'm not sure how much experience you have tuning a car and depending on the piggyback you have/get, I'd take it to someone who knows that system. I'd say realistically you can expect 330 rwhp at 17 or 18psi.

I am running a Vitesse Stage II set-up and love it. Plenty of hp (I have dyno'd 330rwhp at 15lb's boost on 91oct), linear powerband and zero drama with the car.

Planning to, but thanks for the reminder.. I probably would have forgotten.
Not yet, but I had planned to get the Vitesse piggyback...
yep. they're already pretty easy to break loose
That will do nicely. I once couldn't resist fiddling with the MBC and accidentally turned the boost up to 17psi. Aside from the fact that the power band was super spikey, it was pretty ridiculous. I'm sure that the K26 is way outside it's efficient range at that boost though...
