Default TDC cambelt panic

Did my belts this week. Have only done it once before on the 951, so I took my time, with flywheel lock and everything

After everything looked good, tension checked with arneworx and TDC an balance shafts all lined up I got ready for the last step of the procedure: Hand cranking the engine two full turns.

PANIC!!

I was only able to move the engine about 5 deg each way! And it stopped dead. Did I try too hard? Did I bend a valve? Did I jump a notch on the belt? did I miss TDC?

WTF is wrong??

Ran in from the garage, went on RL and startet searching. Many useful advice on TDC and I went out again. Did the line up of the flywheel once more. Its a fidanza wheel which I painted the mark on myself. Did I paint it in the wrong spot? Did I read the angle on the flywheel Vs the notch correctly?

Then I did the wooden pin in the cylinder trick.

IT ALL LINED UP!!

Cursing the car and everyone who constructed it, I sat down in the car trying to think it through......hmm.......is that a gearstick?..........It is in first gear......hmm.....How might that affect.....

Next time:

The car before belts. Now the snow is gone

We've been needing some happy endings on here! Walking away for a little while is sometimes the best tool in the box.

Ok. Sorry to hear this going on. If you didnt start the car I think you are still in the green. I doubt, as do many others, that you can bend valves by turning over the engine by hand.

So everything is on point(cam, flywheel, balance), right? What other things have you done? If you are using a wooden dowel, you should be able to tell when #1 is at TDC(and should be on TDC on the flywheel). Make sure that there isnt anything preventing the movement, like the wooden pin, still in the engine. You did remove the flywheel lock, right?

Any extra details could help. Hope things get fixed.

I don't think you have enough strenght to bend the valves. GL

I did the same thing! i didn't feel a sudden stop in the wrench though, the car just got lower and lower as the motor got harder to turn. I guess you have a stiffer suspension than me haha

Might be a good idea

This was just something I wrote to get the frustration out. As I indicate at the end, I did find the fault. Keeping the car in gear makes it realy hard to cranck the car by hand..

Everything is now good
