Rings for Nikasil cylinders ?
Hello
What kind of rings should I use with a nikasil treatment -where to find them ?
The stock rings are triple chrome plated and are not compatible with Nikasil ; with Nikasil it seems possible to use non-stock pistons like JE or WISECO...

If you are going with Nicom cylinders, talk to JE pistons and they will provide you with the rings. They are working closely with US Chrome on the 944 application. Also, make sure you get the correct clearance as JE recommends it.
I have no experience with Nicom, but would like to hear from someone who does.

In fact I would like to stay with my alusil bores but I need custom made pistons to build my 3 liters engine.
The stock 968 pistons are fine but the comp ratio will be too low at around 7.5 to 1...
Maybe it is possible to coat the JE pistons to run them in alusil bores ?
Thank's for the answers....
and I feel sorry for the people offended by my location information. I hope I will not be obliged to log on with another name and location.
This board is very friendly and dedicated to a worldwide passion : Porsche...
I hope it will stay as is and will leave all the political stupid discussions for others boards.

As we have many times before, let's keep politics off the main forums. Go to the off topic lounge if that is your desire.
I read not too long ago that the 964 rings are the same size as OEM stock. (964 cylinders are Nikasil) Since you are going bigger, not sure what OEM rings would work.
You can have some JE's made to your application, and get a Swain coating applied. Then, run the stock rings and you are on your way.

@m42racer
it happens to know Nicolas. I met him in France and I can see he is a very nice guy and a porsche guy. Your comment is off topic. sorry.
@ Nicolas

BTW who says that Nicasil is not compatible with the stock rings and why do you want nicasil compatible rings. except the 968 Turbo RS block all other blocks are Alusil and I am "sure" you have an Alusil block too.

Konstantin, Now where are you from?
Hey I'm sorry, its was there and I just had to take the shot. Sorry for waving my "Stars and Stripes"
Hey this forum is full of blown up 951's, just trying to add a little humor. Not intended to offend here.
I won't do it again.
Promise.

M42,
I see the humor, but hey its not always easy to see the humor with tension so high. Situational irony. But anyway, politics are always best to be left away from this place, no need to get people fired up about anything other than bad tuning.

Keith -
Hypothetically speaking, the piston should never contact the cylinder. The Swain coating adds a little protection if the piston gets off centered on the rings and hits the skirt. (and it does happen) Most pistons will flake off a little piece of metal, and that is what scores the cylinders. The Sawin will help prevent that.
I wish I would have done it on mine. I found out about them after I put the motor together.
Finding the right ring combo is the bigger issue. Chromed rings and Nicasil don't work well. I swear I read that the 964 Turbo cylinders were Nicasil, and the pistons were sized perfect, therefore the rings would work. I cannot find the thread.. but I will continue to look.
All Porsche 4 cylinder motors were Alusil if I recall. Not sure about the race cars, but production cars were Alusil.

Hello
M42racer nothing against you...
Chrome rings are not useable in Nikasil bores - Check the KS site where it is described.
I have a 3 liters block from my 968 CS and a 2.7 liters head = good combo for a turbocharged project
But the CC volume is much bigger on the 2.7 head and thus with stock 968 pistons the C/R is going under 8 to 1...
Solutions:
1/ find pistons compatible with Alusil => MAHLE ?
2/ Find a coating for customs pistons => SWAIN ?
3/ Coat the block with NIKASIL and use JE pistons with Plasma Moly rings
The 3rd solution has also the advantage to give back the original bore size.
Konstantin , thank's for the support , I am afraid I will not be able to afford the 968 TS pistons you offer (maybe the price is down ?)
BTW what is the dish volume on this pistons ?
Regards
Nicolas

you can use stock Porsche rings to use the alusil bore. what is teh problem? you wnat stock 3 L right?
why you go under 8,0:1 with the 968 pistons?
You will have much higher compresion with them.
did you calculated the voume in the combustion chamber , the head gasket area (compressed) and the head?
i had here the 2.7L head volume but I can not find it any more.
Cris Cervelli did this in his 968 Turbo engine and worked perfect.
7,5:1 is also not that bad. you can safelly run 1.2 bar all day long
