Rings for Nikasil cylinders ?
Hello
What kind of rings should I use with a nikasil treatment -where to find them ?
The stock rings are triple chrome plated and are not compatible with Nikasil ; with Nikasil it seems possible to use non-stock pistons like JE or WISECO...

If you are going with Nicom cylinders, talk to JE pistons and they will provide you with the rings. They are working closely with US Chrome on the 944 application. Also, make sure you get the correct clearance as JE recommends it.
I have no experience with Nicom, but would like to hear from someone who does.

In fact I would like to stay with my alusil bores but I need custom made pistons to build my 3 liters engine.
The stock 968 pistons are fine but the comp ratio will be too low at around 7.5 to 1...
Maybe it is possible to coat the JE pistons to run them in alusil bores ?

I read not too long ago that the 964 rings are the same size as OEM stock. (964 cylinders are Nikasil) Since you are going bigger, not sure what OEM rings would work.
You can have some JE's made to your application, and get a Swain coating applied. Then, run the stock rings and you are on your way.

BTW who says that Nicasil is not compatible with the stock rings and why do you want nicasil compatible rings. except the 968 Turbo RS block all other blocks are Alusil and I am "sure" you have an Alusil block too.

(and it does happen) Most pistons will flake off a little piece of metal, and that is what scores the cylinders. The Sawin will help prevent that.
I wish I would have done it on mine. I found out about them after I put the motor together.
Finding the right ring combo is the bigger issue. Chromed rings and Nicasil don't work well. I swear I read that the 964 Turbo cylinders were Nicasil, and the pistons were sized perfect, therefore the rings would work. I cannot find the thread.. but I will continue to look.
All Porsche 4 cylinder motors were Alusil if I recall. Not sure about the race cars, but production cars were Alusil.

But the CC volume is much bigger on the 2.7 head and thus with stock 968 pistons the C/R is going under 8 to 1...
Solutions:
1/ find pistons compatible with Alusil => MAHLE ?
2/ Find a coating for customs pistons => SWAIN ?
3/ Coat the block with NIKASIL and use JE pistons with Plasma Moly rings
The 3rd solution has also the advantage to give back the original bore size.

did you calculated the voume in the combustion chamber , the head gasket area (compressed) and the head?
i had here the 2.7L head volume but I can not find it any more.
Cris Cervelli did this in his 968 Turbo engine and worked perfect.
