Quick Chip - question
Quick question:
KLR = Fuel Injection chip?
DME = Motor management chip?
KLR computer = w/o tube going in?
DME computer = w tube going in?
Hope I am right!
Thanks for the quick response!

The KLR is the computer on the right w/the tube going into it, and the left is the DME.
And for
KLR = Fuel Injection chip?
DME = Motor management chip?
Im not sure but, i think the DME does both fuel managment and motor.
Wait for someone else to confirm this also.

Finall Got it right:
So, FYI out there:
DME = Computer (Motronics or Main Unit) on the left, uses the DME Chip
KLR = Computer (controls Boost) on the right, with the tube going into it and it uses........you guessed it, the KLR chip.

And to make matters even more correct...
DME - Fuel injection and ignition map chip.
KLR - KNOCK control, sends a signal to the DME when there's knock detected. Oh- it also controls boost too.
HTH!

Wow! A car that uses its left brain AND its right brain must be very intelligent and well rounded. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

"KLR - KNOCK control, sends a signal to the DME when there's knock detected. "
Functionally it may appear to work like this. I've been trying to trace the exact algorithm and I think I've figured it out. The DME sends a timing signal to the KLR, which then passes it through and outputs a trigger signal back to the DME, which then dumps the coil. When the KLR senses knock, it delays the time in between when it receives the timing signal and when it sends out the coil trigger. So even though the DME is the one that actually fires the plugs, it's the KLR that does the ignition retard.
Sounds like a very roundabout system huh? I think this has to do with the fact that Porsche wanted to reuse as much of the 944NA electronics as possible. So they modified the DME slightly and added on a whole new box to manage boost, knock-detection and TPS-velocity based acceleration enrichment. Kinda messy, I would have preferred a brand new box.

Danno, interesting you mentioned that. When I went through the dreaded "Superchip" manual (actually a single page), it mentioned that the "fuel chip" as the one without the pipe going into it. AND it said the ignition chip goes into the one with the pipe.
Go figure.......
Thanks all for the input and feedback. The bottom line is that with Danno help (new stock EPROMS) I got an emission waiver!
