Economically, cars are generally a lousy investment. Modifying a car is probably the worst investment of all. (Speaking from experience here...) But all of the cash and effort sunk into the car at this point is considered "sunk" cost. It's gone and basically won't come back.

IMO, your decision to keep the car and proceed, or to sell, should be based on the cash outlay and effort required from this point to get you where you want to be. Only you can answer if it's still worth it to you.

I've dumped a few cars that really cost me way too much. I don't think of it as the car *beat* me though. In fact, if I dump the car, I *beat* it! Anyway, just my 2 cents. HTH. Good luck.

Hang in there dude! I assume that you have something to drive around while the 951 is down. If so, then take a break. It's not going anywhere. Attack it when you're pumped about doing it again. Pulling the oil pan will be, what, two thirds of the way to removing the whole motor? It seems like you already have the attitude that this is an opportunity to make the thing happier/better so roll with it.

Thumbs up

I agree. Take a break. If it's as cold in NY as it is in DC, the weather alone can be very demoralizing. Hopefully you have another car to drive. Keep us posted!

Seriously... tear it down and find out what happened. Since the plugs are out and you cannot turn it over, something is broken somewhere.

Have you tried to spin it with the car out of gear? Just wondering if you have a clutch lockup. Other than that, could be a broken ring, burned up bearing, or a locked up oil pump.

Does not cost anything to tear it down and see. After that, you can decide to fix it or part it out.

Good luck!

OK, here's something to cheer you up. I met a guy last summer who said he had $90k invested in his pretty stock looking 951. That's about $60 US. Compared to that guy, you're laughing, eh?

Take a step back and don't make any decisions or beat yourself up until you find out exactly what the problem is.

I have too much invested in mine now, but I am ammortising (sp?) the cost over the many many years I figure I will enjoy it.

well, i gotta figure out what it is. i think if it's more than bearings, i'm gonna look into a 2.8 stroker kit, sorta give myself something to say "well, if i have to spend $ at least i'll have something cool to show for it" - i just can't wait to see how this thing drives when it's all done.....

well last time my motor did what you describe it was the rod bearings, check them and see, make sure you check the mic the crank, check for the #2 rod problem, dont just throw rods and mains in, you might ruin more money and time, check the crank check the journals, check all rod bearings, that will be a good start point, good luck

Ahmet <--owns a 951 with a total investment of ~$6.5kish, and have new belts, hoses, brakes, engine rebuild, axles, bushings, etc. to show for it...

I really don't mind having spent that, so long as I feel like i've learned something or gained some something (not necessarily even performance, but at least, confidence in something not being likely to break because its' been repalced or done right etc). I guess i'll have to tear into things soon and see where i'm at, it's just sooooo hard to find the time right now (after devoting the past 3 weeks to the car, my other obligations are calling).

thx for the support everyone!! i'll post what i find as soon as i can.

I defintely appreciation your frustration but you really can't decide whether to throw in the towel until you know what you're faced with...

Figure out the problem and take it from there...I'm betting (hoping) it will be something inexpensive...I can't see an engine being fine one day and then not the other without significant other signs, noise and symptoms...

Best of Luck!

Brumos has a special for an '86 turbo short block for $1,200. That is a deal. Hope it is nothing serious. Any leads yet?

Dmoffitt

I need some help, last night after completing rebuilding my engine (8 weeks of work) I drove my car for 10 minutes just around the block everything felt ok. But this morning the engine is seized, I don't have any clue of what is going on, may be hydrolock? I did a search on sized engines and this is the closest to my situation. Dmoffitt what was the problem with your engine I just need an Idea where to begin.

Thanks

Hang tough, there are a lot of us that have spent way too much on our cars because we love them, just to have her bitch slap us ( I think Perry knows what I'm talking about )

I agree on taking a short break ( week or two )

Then bust back into that baby and fix her.

Best of Luck
