Post Drag race results

Just thought I'd post some times from last nights Drag Night sponsored by the Rocky Mt. region PCA at Bandimere speedway.

Remember, these times are from a track that sits above denver at 6,000 feet.

My 87 951, all stock best time, 15.3 @ 92MPH.

There were two other mostly stock 951's there and both turned similar times.

This seems slow but was inline with what the Boxsters were running and faster than most pre-1990 911's.

The fastest time of the day was by some guy with a race 914-6, I think his best run was like 13-9.

It was tough on the car so I don't think I'd do it again till next year, but it sure was fun.

that's awfully slow imo - perhaps the altitude? my rsx pulled far faster times (14.7) with less horsepower, and a LOT less torque.

not trying to knock you - it's nice to see people racing these cars (even if it's in a straight line lol) - but you might want to look @ a compression test, or a dyno, or get a boost gauge / air-fuel meter, check your vac. lines, etc... your car should be in the mid to low 14s, heck the turbo s was in the 13.5 range stock...

Like I said, it seems slow but was in line with what the other 951's and boxsters were running.

My compression, turbo and a/f are all perfect, albeit all stock.

The staff at Bandimere I was talking too said that the adjustment for the 6,000 foot elevation was approx. 1-1.2 seconds. So take in that adjustment, an inexperienced drag racer (myself) and the car was at low/flat 14's.

You got me thinking and I looked for an official correction guide for altitude and found it at NHRA.com.

Using their corrections for the track in Denver I raced at my time would have been 14.38 @97.2MPH at sea level.

Pretty cool little guide they have there. They give adjustments in time for anything over 1200 feet above sea level. An altitude you wouldn't expect to see much degredation in performance.

Technodyne machines laugh in the face of high altitude.. <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

High altitude, less oxygen, lower performance. Pretty simple. Those times are very good for the conditions you were racing under. Most of the numbers posted by the mags are after multiple runs, optimizing tire pressures, with experienced pilots. You could most likely lower the numbers into the 14's with just a bit of practice.

I remember the first time I ever raced at a drag strip. My leg was literally hopping from adrenaline, made holding the foot down on the brake next to impossible while waiting for the tree to start.

Yep - even with a turbocharger altitude will KILL performance. It's even worse with NA engines.

My lightly modified '89 951 ran 13.8 @ 104mph at a track near Vancouver, BC. It's on of the fastest tracks around as the alitude is near sea level. Most cars have to de-tune to get traction!!

Being turbocharged, you would fare better than any N/A car. Turbos and SC can compensate for some altitude changs.

Doesn't it suck running at High Altitudes, I had a friend run a 10 second vette at the same track and the quickest he could punch out was mid 12's <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

kgosselin,
how often do they have those PCA events at Bandimere? Do have to be a member to attend? I live in Ft. Collins and that sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks.

Two answer a few questions,

Bandimere is open all the time. You can get many runs in depending upon when you go.

For all the people wanting to "compare" times. At the import drags at bandimere, 17.5 was the break point between fast and slow.

Most C5 vettes are high 14s low 15s. I have seen a viper put down a 14.8. My friends 32 valve cobra ran a 15.8. The 5.0 he had before that ran 16.9.

The FAST imports (street 8...semi-pro type import racing) finalist with high 13s were making it in.

My 951 turned a 14.5@103 at banimere (with a blown headgasket). The car could easily go into the 13s if it could hook up. Running a 14.5 is dumping the clutch and spinning like hell through 1st and part of 2nd.

Biggest problem with a 951 at the dragstrip is building boost in 1st gear and the gearing. They are not drag cars, but they are still fun to run.

They just aren't fast. (FYI, when I am talking faster, I normally put down high 10s at 130mph at that track with ease.

Your Times are about right. My car runs 14.1@100 up here, and its not stock.

i turned a 14.1 @ 99mph and my car is stock right now other than the lindsey boost enhancer! sounds like some solid runs your should be proud.hey dana are those times at high altitude??? cause they sure sound slow...stock c5's around here are low 13's and an ls6 is in the 12's bone stock!
Even at that altitude..a viper posting a 14.8 is very sad...i didnt realize that the altitude made such a change in performance but i guess it makes since ....considering the hair dryer.
