Post Tapping for Gauges

I have never tapped for any type of aftermarket gauges before, so I would appreciate any advice.

Here are the Gauges I am installing:

Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, and Water Temp.

What would be the best locations for each, and what type of sealer should I use for the threads?

TIA

I can help with the oil temp, mounted the sensor in the large banjo bolt for the turbo drain, some say this is not a good place, but I think if the temps are ok in this location all is well.

Water Temp: Tap into the gooseneck where the bleed screw is located.

Oil Pressure: I had a cnc fitting machined that threaded in between the oil pressure sender and the engine. That fitting was tapped for 1/8" NPT compression fitting. Make sure you use copper tubing, and not the supplied nylon tubing. You don't want 200F oil squirting on you.

Oil Temp: Again... I had a cnc fitting machined to repalce the oil drain bolt. Then the Autometer sender threaded into this, and the whole thing threded back into the oil drain bolt hole.

First, I think you're wasting your time with the water temperature and oil pressure gauges. What's wrong with the stock gauges?

Second, I tapped the large banjo bolt that connects the turbo return line to the oil pan. This worked great for me. I was at the track this past weekend, and the highest oil temps I saw were up to 120C, so I don't think that this is giving a "bad" indication of oil temp. Normally the 944 Turbo runs around 90C on the highway, maybe 100C in stop and go.

If you're not going to drive your car on the track, I'd skip the whole thing.

BTW I installed a boost gauge (reads 0-3 bar) and an air/fuel ratio meter. Gotta say, not really all that happy with either. The boost gauge is mounted far right, and is obscured by the shifter in 5th gear. The 10-segment LED air/fuel meter is kinda useless -- it just shows 8 or 9 LEDs at full throttle, no LEDs for closed throttle, and for the rest of the time -- including cruising at 80 mph -- it dithers between 1 and 6 or 7 LEDs, rapidly (up/down/up/down/up/down, pretty much as fast as a digital VU meter).

Perhaps if I get around to installing a manual boost controller these last two gauges will come in handy, but for now I'm considering building a 3 character digital display to show the oil temp, and mount this right between the tach and speedo, just at the bottom edge of the instrument cluster -- and ripping out the 3 gauges below the radio.

Hope this helps.

The factory oil pressure gauge is far from accurate.

That is a good enough reason to get a real gauge.

Also, the resolution of the factory oil pressure gauge, and the water temp gauge are far from "fine". Another reason to get a real gauge.

Oil temp is a great tool if you race the car where oil temps can get real high.

Anyway... that's why I installed a full set of gauges.

oil temp, oil pressure, water temp, egt, boost, and a/f.

Also, you might want to try a boost gauge that doesn't read quite so high. You're never going to be running 3 bar, and probably never even going to be running 2 bar (at least not for long periods of time).

I've found that the 0-25psi boost gauge gives great resolution over a realistic range.

OK

This is a pop quiz!

Who can tell me what's incorrect about this car, based on the interior photos.

The car is a 1988 944 Turbo.

Something is very different about the inside. What is it?

Tim Richards, Derrek Khajavi, John Anderson, Neal Wright, your answers don't count. Don't spill the beans.... :-)

Let's see who has the sharpest eye!

Hint: It's not the color combo.

There are two (2) items that are incorrect.

The first person to guess both correctly will receive their choice of:

Option 1: Billet Fuel Pressure Regulator

Option 2: Billet aluminum adapter to run a MAF unit with the factory air box. Perfect for those "stealth setups".

Winner pays $10 shipping to anywhere in US.

International winners pay actual shipping costs.

Good luck,

Oh...

Your answer must be posted to this thread. No direct email answers.

And to clarify about prize option #1... it's an adjustable billet fuel pressure regulator for the 951.
