Looks like this 01e 6 speed factory 968 turbo RS transaxle I have for sale here has a Audi based 4.11 r&p gear set as well as taller 5th & 6th gears

Just thought I would share some of my latest findings on a 968 gearbox I picked up. Over the last few years I have had a 968 power haus 2 short gear set gearbox, that's was a quick unit! Then I had purchased the spare parts kit that came with factory RS bubbles car and got 2 gearboxes. One was a RS the other a S and I thought I finally had my options down pat. But the RS was standard r&p just had longer 5-6 and 75% lsd maybe some steel syncs. The S gearbox ended up having some parts swapped over the years and funny stamping they turned the g4401 into a g4402 which was weird and it didn't have the 3.4 r&p just had the standard unit so basically just a RS that needed to be gone through.

But I recently purchased a brand new factory 968 turbo S g4401 gearbox that still had the wrapping on it and shipping protector pieces over Input shaft and shifter as well as stickers. As soon as I received I opened her up on side case and bingo the coveted 34/10 r&p 3.4 is in there as well as 4 plate 75% lsd motorsports diff. Here's some pics I'm very excited to get this in my maritime 968 this summer. I have another hurdle the axle flanges in this diff are special larger beefier units with 951 motorsports part numbers they use the larger 965 type cv joints and larger bolts 928 part # units as they are also in the later 928 cars. Problem I see with using them is I have to get custom axle shafts I believe as the spline count on standard 968 shafts is different than the spline count on larger 965 type cv's so I could try finding a source for custom 28 spline inner side and standard 25 spline outer to use these output flanges or just use standard 968 axles and gearbox output flanges! Anybody know a good source for custom high quality axle shafts?

Cool find.

Interesting that the output flange doesn't have the self centering ring at the outside diameter. I would have thought it would have been stronger. I have a 968LSD sitting on a work bench and haven't paid it 1 minute of attention in 2 years, maybe this is only the 944/51 flange.

Looks like some heat blueing there, is the splined shaft part of the cv flange or was it made separately and welded.

If so, that's your answer.

Well it's a bit larger diam and chunkier in the middle and the bolts are bigger so I would think these cv joints and flanges are 50% stronger at least. Also the 965 928 part # cv joints use tin grease caps so there sealed better and this don't need that centering ring as that was more of a grease seal than anything! It's brand new so the blueing is from the manufacturing process.

No the 968 01E trans is a G50 based unit has much bigger internals and diff than Audi based 944/51 trans the flanges don't interchange into the diffs so these are special to these trans I have a email into 2 different driveshaft shops that specialize in custom stuff to see if the price point is with it. I have dug in the 968 turbo parts list and bin but can't find any special parts on the trailing arm hub side as far as flanges cups over there so factory had to have made a motorsports driveshaft with different spline count on each side!

Interesting find; I had picked up a set of late 928 CV axles with the intent to reuse the CVs (inner+ outer/stub) and see what axle length changes would be needed. It seems I need to still see if the outer flange spline/diameter matches the 928 outer CV stub.

Here is part number and pic of this 108mm diff flange I ended up getting dss tech to make custom chromoly cage axles with 108mm cv on one side and 100mm cv on other side so that I have new and stronger but most important it all fits like factory for $800ish

Thanks for the added details/part number on the 968TS 108mm output flange; At some point I would like to try and figure out what changes between that and a standard G50 flange (950.332.209.01) are.

I also re-read this entire thread the other day after picking up a used ARX. My original intent was to use just the ARX 5th and 6th gears. There was a point made (on maybe page 5?) that all gears from 2WD Audi based 01E transmissions can be put into their same respective locations in the 968 transmission.

If this is the case, any reason not to use 2nd through 6th from the ARX in a high tq/power 968?

I see some gap from 3rd to 4th (natural to the ARX).

Selling a original factory 968 turbo S/RS special weissach built Motorsports 6 speed transaxle I purchased with a bunch of original spares kit that came with bubbles car the factory 1of4 black 968 turbo RS the owner in the 2000 sold car in 2009 and buyer didn’t purchase any spares. This transaxle was originally a g4401/2 turbo S trans it has the special non production serial number that matches however someone in the past over its racing career has removed the 3.4 r&p and installed a standard 3.75 r&p and prob I assume changed/tampered with the code at that time to g4402/2 which doesn’t exist but just trying to be full disclosure here....

I have removed the tail section to confirm it still has the taller 5-6th gears .882 & .711 which it does and the lsd is still there and holds 22ft lbs of torque on the bench. This transaxle has not been run in a car since mid 2000 and has a lot of backlash very loose and inside the box the r&p gears all look very good no chips or unusual wear however it will need to be rebuilt as it’s so loose and has a lot of slop noise when running through all the gears on the bench! I have a short video of running it through some gears to show this but assume your going to need to rebuild this trans. It is a great opportunity to get a taller overdrive gearbox with a cool story behind it and code as well as lsd

$3,500 shipped conus please pm me if interested thanks

More pics the third one down shows the factory card from a real 968 turbo S g4401/2 gearbox another one I have the has a serial number just a few away showing the back story. To give some clarity the turbo RS g4403/2 boxes serial numbers were 000500 series numbers and so little of each were made its easy to tell if you have a real one as they were much different serials than any other 968 production boxes!

Quick Reply: I Finally found custom gears and r&p for the 968 tranny!
