which suspension setup is "the ****" theese days?
well; i used to run kw competition 2 way, quite happy with it, but a buddy bought a 944turbo, and needed something quick, seeing as my 944 was looking rather sad I said he could have mine.
so now the question is, just buy the same thing again, or is there something better, stronger, faster out now?

KWV3, Moton, Leda, many choices usually selected based on use, goals, and budget...
I have selected Bilstein Escort cup for mine, but these days there are so many different choices available!

I had kw competition before like I said, which are again better than clubsport, which are agian better than v3, in short its a v3 with uniballs, setup for track only, when using on public roads, dont drink water
should say that car usage is 100% track, and its a trailerqueen, allthough sometimes used to grab a burger on public roads, widebody should hopefully be done this year sa well.
goal = winning, it will be used for racing here, price range is a big flexible, but the 3 way kw comp is like 8000 euros, which hurts a bit to much.

My use is 99% street, and I have opted for full monoball bushings, escort cup shocks / struts, with moderate spring rates (300F/400R).. not really a track setup, but an aggressive street setup..
If going full track I would likely be looking at Ledas or Motons.. the KWs seem more street oriented with the top of the line setup being good enough for the track, whereas Leda and Moton seem more track oriented with the entry level being usable on the street!
OH, and welcome back to 944 ownership, mine have been bleeding me dry as of lately, but soon enough they will be back together, and better than ever!

I'm running in the 1:27 mark at Willow Springs Raceway (the big track) which is hauling ***... Plus... I do it on Nitto NT-01's (which are a couple of seconds slower than slicks)
I run the Bilstein Escort setup which isn't even adjustable.

Burning Brakes
Last season Bilstein Cup. This season Motons. It will be interesting to compare. No other changes. I will be going to the same tracks, and I know my exact times from Rennpoints so it will be very easy to see the comparison. Better be worth the money. I was very happy with the Bilsteins. Before that I ran Koni's. The Bilsteins were so much better.

Nice... but not necessary as there are a LOT of things that can be done, and should be done, that will make a far larger difference than the difference between Motons and Bilstens, before you spend that kind of money.
Assuming that you have the entire suspension setup as well as the car setup and sorted, and you are actually a fast driver, then perhaps you'd see a few tenths between a set of Motons and the Bilsteins.
If that's not the case, and it almost never is...... spend the money elsewhere.

I think you'll see the biggest difference between the two on tracks where you need jump the curbs to take a straighter line (like the esses at Buttonwillow Raceway for example). Then... the Motons will have a big advantage.
But if that's not the case, such as tracks like California Speedway or Willowsprings, Parumph, Las Veges, etc... the difference is marginal at best unless you can really drive the car at 10/10ths lap after lap, etc...

A lot of the racers in my area have switched from the Bilsteins to the Motons over the last few years, and I've heard nothing but rave reviews for the Motons.
That's not to say that the Bilsteins are *not* good, or that the cost difference is the best use of a few thousand $$... it's just to say, in real world applications (at least the tracks in the northeast), the Motons seem to perform better and provide an edge - which will help satisfy Anders' goal of "winning".

Richard, what koni setup did you run before the bilsteins? 8742 & 8242 dbl adjustables, or 3012 inverted dbl adj?

I ran the single adjustable MO30 style shocks. The shafts are so much smaller in diameter than the Bilsteins. I blew out the top bushings quickly. The Bilsteins shafts are huge by comparison. I look at the Motons and am back to small diameter shafts, hopefully they hold up.

PCA E stock is the most competetive class in the Mid West at least. To be competetive in Estock, I need every advantage I can get. A couple of tenths is the difference between first and second. Euro 911's are formidable competition and very hard to beat, they have the power to weight advantage and a better torque curve than a Turbo. Its then a toss up between S2's and Turbo's who gets the advantage. I cannot say enough about the Bilstein cup setup, its a fantastic setup. Simple, bullet proof, highly effective and very competetive. I would recomend it to anyone. I agree that there are lower cost, bigger benefit mods, but in my case I have very liitle left to gain a performance advantage. Headers is about the only thing I have left.

Richard, the Bilsteins are actually an "inverted style" strut. If you take off the nut at the bottom, you'll find the whole cartridge comes out, and there's a small shaft in there. The advantage is it distributes the load over the body, or larger portion, of the cartridge. A very clever design, really.
