Default Swapping roofs? Anyone done it?

Contemplating swapping 2 roofs around. We have a spare parts car with a non sunroof and I'm considering swapping it over for my sunroof'd version.
Anyone done this or at least swapped to a non sunroof type?

I'm led to believe it isn't all that hard, but I'd love to hear what ever anyone has experienced and pics would be even better.

A friend had this done by a workshop, though I ignore all the details involved I remember them saying it was no big deal at all,

If you can do it at the spot welds, it should be relatively easy. If, OTOH, you think cutting out the solid section, and welding in to your open hole is easy, you have a big disappointment on your hands. I tried to do it that way once, and it is impossible to keep the panels from warping.

Thom, is there any chance your friend took pictures?

No, this would definitely be done via the spot welds.
For some reason I seem to remember seeing some pics showing someone doing this and the A pillars were bent forwards at some point. Not sure why. Perhaps it was during a cage install?

Or you can form a fiberglass or kevlar roof section.

I've seen it done and know the guy who did the work, it is quite straightforward.
There is a lot of spotwelds.

How do they chop-top cars? Its pretty popular with the hot-rod crowd, so there has to be some shops familiar with it...

Also, wouldn't just be easier to weld the closed?

Mainly doing it to gain headroom with helmet. Losing a few lbs up top is a secondary benefit. Plus we have the spare car with the solid roof. That spare car has paid for itself by now. Interior was sold. Motor has been used by Sean for his 16v project, and now I've had to use the whole front end (panelwise) due to aquaplaning off the highway and having another accident. Funny thing is that it's almost the same colour as my old Slate Grey metallic car so now I could put the doors off this Japanese S2 onto my car and it would very tempting to spray the car back to a Grey finish. Don't really need to be spending the money though, but will have to come to some decision now that I've got a half and half colour car.

Patrick,

check it out from Beni's Facebook. He has there 968 project picture folder and there should be pictures of changing the roof as well.

Thanks Olli. It's actually in the link that David posted above #6 which is exactly what you're talking about. If I had the skills of Mark and Beni I'd do it in a heartbeat...but my fortes lie elsewhere. lol
