The vast majority of 944's were assembled in Audi's Neckarsulm plant I believe.
Yep, it's part of your VIN.

Well I stick to leno these days, letterman has gotten way to liberal, and the comedy is "dumb" funny or "make your own joke with this"

I liked conan, I remember on his old show he always use to ask for a porsche, hoping taht porsche would give him a car for the plug.... How about rennlister give him a 951?? Im sure we could all scrap up enough spare parts to put one together..... AND MAYBE this might lead to porsche building a new "944" type car, with enough talk about it from conan.
THAT WOULD BE COOL!

(and maybe everyone that donates would get lifetime tickets for the show ;-)

Sounded like he was shooting from the hip, I know he owned many Porsche cars in the 80's, I think a few 928's. I remember seeing a photo of him driving into work with white gloves on.

Always thought he was gay, wait isn't Paul Schaefer the real father of his kid?

But I doubt he even remembers the origins of the 951 just rambling. Doubt he remembers any of the significant accolades which back then were huge.

Best handeling production car in America, compared to Ferarris and Lambo even the rest of the Porsche lineup. And yes with that 4 cyl. it was faster than many. Certainly around a track.

To bad these cars stopped production.

I'm going to write a letter to show.. he is not even technically right, it's not a VW.

Looking for more confirmation but from wiki:

seems the 968 was the first of the series to be manufactured at a Porsche factory... still don't know for sure. but i seem to remember Jeremy Clarkson mentioning that as well in the 968 review he did back in 1992.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_968

"Production was moved from the Audi plant in Neckarsulm (where the 924 and 944 had been manufactured under contract to Porsche), to Porsche's own factory in Zuffenhausen."

btw there is one huge downgrade to owning a 968 compared to the 944 cars...

the f_cking rocker panels. total garbage. what the effen crap were they thinking about ?

Interesting I did not know that. Well, Neckarsulm is only a few kms from Stutggart.. The Audi R8 is built there. I wonder how different each of the factories was back then.

If the car made a huge appearance (long segment) on the new Conan show I would donate some cash towards a Rennlist donation of a 951. Just to see our car showcased on TV in 2010/11 would be really rewarding I think.

Maybe opening a Facebook Fan page for that cause? Then conan could plug how he got a 951 from the fans because of lettermans wisecrack. I'm sure it's possible ..

Hell yeah, lets get it rolling, im sure we can thrown in a few upgrades

heck Ive seen people give chassis away! then get conan on the track with it.... we may have just created a monster..

how about we paint it in "the curtains match the drapes red"??

The 944 has Audi and Porsche parts but no VW parts as far as I know..
Lots of VW parts there. There are even Mercedes & BMW parts, if you look carefully 944's are real "combos" made form other brands left over parts

They were all built in Zuffenhausen in the Porsche factory.. but not the 924.
only last model year (1991) 944 models were built in Zuffenhausen. Thats mainly because factory personel had to practice building 4-cylinder cars before 968 manufacturing begins. Porsche didn't continue co-operation with Audi Neckarsulm any longer. Same situation with Boxster. Currently 90% of Boxster/Caymans are produced here in Finland. They will stop it after 2011, when they move production back to Zuffenhausen, where they found extra production capacity.
