Default is it hard to run with no power steering ?

had a big problem changing out the high-pressure ps line that runs from the pump to the rack...

the fitting (rack end) is fused. just can't get enough torque on it. and more money spent on a hose for nothing....

don't want to go any harder and leave myself stranded...

so the question is, in general, when the day comes that eigther my rack or pump fails... can i just cut the ps belt and be done with it ?

i own a 968. it was only a matter of time before i'd have a "banghead" repair going on.

effin' hose is 15 years old, so, do i need drop the crossmember to really "get on it" ? add heat ?

if i do that might as well do the motor mounts too ?

take it to my friends aircraft shop ? boeing (heat/exotic chemicals) ?

or take it to a Porsche tech and pay through the nose ?

better to wait until the rack fails, since i might end up breaking something ?

fail.

You can run with manual steering (depowered rack). At speed the car will be fine. It might even feel better. At slow parking lots speed it will be pain.

Keep the power steering. I have a depowered rack in my car and it sucks and I have 245/45-16s. This winter I am either going the proper manual rack or back to power steering.

Keep your power steering. You can drive without the belt, but you should change to a proper manual rack or fix your powersteering system. Search manual vs power racks. Plenty of good information.

thanks. nothing has failed yet. save for the leaky hose.

but just asking in case that it does as a result of fluid loss or typical ps pump/rack P-car failure.

This link is about as good as it gets for those of you wanting to complete the change to an OE manual rack for our cars. Know the Cup car drivers complained that the cup cars didn't have power steering. All modern sports and race cars have power steering. The cup cars had 16" narrow tires. Most of our cars have larger tires/wheels on our cars.

The cost of the conversion is about the same as purchasing a new rack. Rebuilt ZF racks are around $1195 and reseal kits are around $80.

Some folks really like the manual conversion, and some will tell you a 951 with power steering is faster around a track. I kept mine and could have easily converted. We had all the parts and it would have cost about $800 bucks. Similar to what I spent resealing, installing new lines, and adding a larger PS cooler. I think part of the longevity issues with these racks is heat. We mounted the new cooler above the intercooler.

How about fixing the problem?

The bolt on the rack has a nice large diameter flange on it. Get a small cold chisel and position it on this flange so that when you hit the chisel with a hammer it will drive the flange around. Works really well and doesn't do much damage to the bolt if you're careful.

I had to do this when o/hauling my power rack. I was able to reuse the bolt.

Hope this helps,
Mike

what they said ^^^^

I tried all possibilties. Result: keep the ps or go manual with a real manual rack.

Similar comment to Mikey. You can use the OD of the fitting to get it off. I use vice grips. If not its easy to run without power steering.

I switched to a manual rack. My ps one leaked every two years after new lines. At speed the feel is great and not hard to turn. Tight twists are tough though, but more manageable than a ps rack modded to be manual.

I run beltless on stock 16" wheels and never had a problem and parallel park my car from time to time. As far as a rebuilt rack, I remember reading that people here were having success with the el cheapo reman unit from Autozone. Actually, they tracked the rebuilder down to a place in Arizona that supposedly does good work. The only complaint is the rack comes painted black.

$199 after you return your core.

And yes, I am an Internet troll and an forum encyclopedia expert. Seriously, I always mental note things for future repairs.

Who was rebuilding the power racks here on the board? I have two power units that I'd like to have rebuilt.
