Default Autozone Power Steering Rack -- good?

Anyone ever get one of these? Price is curiously low -- is this a "get what you pay for" thing, or just a dividend of high-volume mass production?

I've installed two and they're fine. They're rebuilt by Addco here in phoenix. The only negative is they paint the entire rack black.

Its Atsco not addco according to the place where I got mine.
The rebuilt price is $183 + $105 core and they are actually very well rebuilt. The first thing I did was a complete top to bottom inspection, rack is properly greased, the entire rack has been polished, no longitudal scratches. Looking down both ends all the bits are there including the nylon spacer ring on the P/S (ever so easy to break). I agree, sucks that they paint them completely black, including where the pressure lines attach. I had to use a razor blade and peel the paint. I lifted it there and on the ZF plate (wanted to get the part #). The paint comes off extremely easy and you will scratch lots of it off installing the rack, even just with your hands.

The only dumb thing I found, is they routed the pressure equilizing line (the plastic one) in a big sprial around the rack, looping it through the hard line right where the mounting bracket goes. I had to pinch the line off a little bit to get the bracket on. Had my rack now over 2 weeks and it doesn't leak a drop, and it feels MUCH better than the old worn out one.

I got quotes from $800-$1200 for a brand new power rack, and Paragon sells the manual conversion kit (brand new rack, inner, outer tie rods and intermediate shaft) for ~$1000.

So to clarify. Are these just rebuilt ZF ones the same as ours or a generic rack? Does it have a different ratio?

Yeah, they're just rebuilt stock racks.

Oh yeah, it is Atsco. Addco is the box manufacturer down the street. Atsco is local.

I have a rebuilt rack and p/s pump from Zims, not to mention rebuilt water pump as well. Zims have a very good reputation for rebuilt parts, with the same warranty as new or sometimes exceeding it (the rack had a 2 year warranty, the same for the p/s pump and h2o pump).

Spending so much money on a rebuilt rack, i would go for Zims, however i never purchased any rebuilt parts from anyone else to compare, and not saying every other rebuilt part is bad, but i would advise to go to Zims for their reputation.
