Default Rod bearing related question

A frined of mine just brought an 84 944 N/A with an engine knok problem. So first thing we removed the oil sump and discovered that connecting rod #3 was black as if it was burned. The rest of the connectong rod are looking god with no signs of damage (IMO). Another thing I noticed it's that CR nuts are all grinded in the outsite. If they are rotated 180 degrees they hit the lower end of the crankcase. Could this indicate that it's a 3L crankshaft?

yeah that doesnt really look too good... Dont think that they would have put a 3.0L crank in this.

Even if it is a 3.0l crank, you better check 'Outta Wat'. PO like that should be SHOT...in the GROIN...TWICE...with ROCK SALT!

That was some serious rod damage. Even though the journal cleaned up well, I would double check and make sure your friend didnt oval that journal.

I think you can only replace the crank shaft and then go from there. Sorry man thats really your friends only option

Just bolt it back together as-is, the results will be the same. Which is to say not good.

Your engine and oil passages are full of bits of metal. Yeah the filter will catch a bit of it, but not all. The engine needs to come out, be completely disassembled, and cleaned by a machine shop. Besides, even if that weren't necessar, removing the bottom half of the block while it is in the car can't be any easier than just doing it the right way.

I have no clue what is going on with the crank throws. It definately looks odd that you are getting that kind of interference. Maybe it is a long stroke crank, who knows? You might pull off the head, and measure the travel of the piston to see if it is 78 or 88mm (can't recall the exact strokes).

judging by the discoloration in the rod cap and crank, I would bet the crank runout might be another problem to add to the mix

the nut being ground down looks like the bottom end was balanced and thats where they removed the metal? its foolish to me, my jeep engine had been balanced and the weight was removed on the bottom of the rods...

Just take $100 bills and keep scrubbing the rod journal until its clean, replace the $100 bills as often as possible.

It might be better to pull the engine…and get another crank and another set of rods.

BTW – the picture of the rod nut with the ‘flat’ – the flat doesn’t even face the block wall where the clearance is at the tightest.

I would not trust anything else in this engine, its time to pull it out and see what other treasures the previous owner passed on!
