Default Starter problem...help!!!!

The starter is grinding up against the starter ring and I don't know if its the wrong starter or what. Did they possibly change the starters over the years or possibly the bellhousing? If it helps I have a 86 951 with a 87 951 motor in it

Its not a bad starter...it engages cause I took it out and just grounded it to the bellhousing and it comes out...its just not grabbing the starter ring.

The ring on the starter that shoots out is not engaging with the starter ring to crank the motor. Instead, it is hitting the starter ring and just grinding up against it.

Any chance you might have ended up with an NA bellhousing during the swap? That sounds exactly like what happens with an NA BH. The 951 bellhousing mounts the starter just a bit outboard to compensate for the extra 951 starter ring teeth.

It's either you got the wrong starter or the bell housing. Can you get the part numbers on both units?

If it is a N/A bellhousing...can I use it on a turbo motor and if I buy a N/A starter will it work with the bellhousing and actually start?

Sorry but an NA BH will not work on a 951. The 951 DME reads a different electronic count from the larger 132 tooth starter ring on the 951 plus the clutch is 240 mm vs. 225 mm on the NA. The starters are all the same except the turbo version is a narrow body but still mounts fine. Check the part number on the bellhousing, it should start in 951 if it's a 87 turbo version and start w/ 944 and end in 2R for an 86 turbo (either bellhousing will work as long as they come from a 951. This has happened before and the correct BH is the only solution if that's actually the problem.
