lol...is that going to be a trip. I just put the damn motor in. Well if that is the issue then it has to be done. Just wish I was able to drive it before the winter came, I miss the performance of a real car

Yes that's the 86 Turbo BH part number, I have 3 of them here. If that is true then it sure sounds like somehow the wrong starter ring is on there. Did you use the 86 clutch, flywheel assembly off your old engine or go with the one off the 87 951 engine you swapped? What parts from the crank back were actually used from the swapped motor? Is the starter gear hitting the face of the starter ring and tearing up the leading edge of the teeth or meshing with the teeth and wearing off the full width on the tips of the starter gear? Sorry for all the questions but this doesn't make any sense.

Sounds like you know what you are doing if you made it this far with a swap so I'm sure this is very frustrating to you.

yea...everything on the motor is from an 87' besides the bellhousing. The starter gear is hitting the face of the starter ring and it's grinding the very edges of the teeth. It seems like it wants to fit but the clearance is only off by a tad. It is very frustrating but thats life for you. Plus, these ain't mustangs or civics we're dealing with here. I recall someone saying that the starter rings are different because of the tooth count on them. I got my starter ring from Azmi951, I'm pretty positive its a turbo starter ring but I sent him a Pm to just make sure it was. There is nothing really else to diagnose because the components are pretty straight forward.

Were both of the guide pins intact when you put the bellhousing on? So the teeth are only wearing on the leading edge and not engaing full depth? If you had an NA starter ring I think it would engage fully but loosely and wear the tips off of the starter gear teeth evenly across the entire face so it sounds like you have the larger 951 ring but maybe the BH is shifted a bit out of alignment??? I can't imagine what else it might be if all the parts are correct.

true, I do remember having a little trouble with the guide pins but I made sure it when on smooth. Tomorrow I'm going to check everything out again and make sure I'm not overlooking something like a misaligned BH. Its so funny because you have no clue how close the starter gear is from actually grabbing the starter ring. I honestly am going to measure the distance because I don't even think its an 1/8 in. off.

Ok...I'm still having this starter problem. I bought a new starter and all and I've just about had it with this problem. The part numbers are all correct and I honestly don't understand why it is grinding up against the starter ring?

I really would hate to rip the motor out again. Winter is coming and it will give me time, but its a lot of labor I have to put in yet again
