Imagine how much cooler oil temps on the track must be . . . I'd probably have to take the 2nd oil cooler I just installed back out!

High Tech Ceramics are very interesting. In 78 my family relocated to Atlanta for a job my father took at a small HTC company - Ceradyne Thermo Materials. They made parts for various applications including the space shuttle. He talked a little about cutting edge stuff back then. IIRC at the time there was supposedly a locomotive engine running in China that ran without oil. It only had a grease pit it dipped. At the time it was unknown how long the engine would last. Some thought it could go indefinitely. They considered some of the stuff they made harder and far more durable than steel with incredible anti-wear properties. So I'm not surprised to hear HTC's used in a capacity like this today.

Anyway, from your testing so far, how do you think these compare, in terms of spool-up and boost threshold, to a variable geometry turbo?

Oh. My.

Maybe a dual ball bearing Garrett GT_R isn't the answer to all life's questions after all.

Well, what with everyone involved trying to inflate my build budget, I am just trying to wrap my mind around how much of a bump in $$ and how much to the right the schedule slips to be an early adapter of this too...

FWIW, I have already taken on the call to early / only adapt a few other pieces that should prove to be QUITE fun indeed....

So... whats the low down on this turbo?

Mechanically, using three bearings for one axle doesn't make sense.
I guess the assembly is rather loose otherwise they won't live long.

From what I can gather it is 2 axial, 1 radial.. one of the three is replacing the thrust bearing face... But I could be wrong...

Can these "oil free" turbos be mounted in any angle or do they have the same mounting constraints as the regular oiled ball-bearing turbos?

As long as you provide Water cooling, I think you should be able to put them at whatever angle you would like.

Do you mean you can't see any reference to them John or listed in their specs? There's blurb about them on the front page of the link.
