I test drove an '89 back in the day. Those cars didn't sell and were way overpriced.

The car I drove was on the lot for close to two years and was going for $10-15k under sticker IIRC. I remember the car, black/black partial with OEM gold anodized wheels and engine bits.

Are you kidding?

The other day I configured a Cayman S at over $120K. That wasn't even trying to make it expensive, I was just adding the options I'd like if I had the money to waste.

Just for fun I went on now and configured a base Boxster over $88K, not difficult.

On the other hand, if you don't add any options...$88K gets you a Carrera cabrio, or almost all the way to a Carrera S coupe.

EDIT: Also should point out that, in '88, $47K would buy you an optioned-up Carrera, too.

Even if they were going for 15K under sticker that puts them at about 50K in todays dollars.

My original window sticker says the car sold brand new for ~47,4.

LOL no I wasn't... are you?

Seriously? $120k for a Cayman? Who on earth would pay $120k for a Cayman??

I find it tough to option out a Cayman S anywhere near $120K but I'm not interested in the frilly bits like "leather covered vent slats" or having the center console painted to match the car.

If you option the car out for performance (LSD) and a modicum of comfort (leather, xenon, heated seats, etc) a Cayman S lands around 80K.

tweak it, add turbos, partial roll cage, and i can see a new Cayman S topping 100 K.

don't know what you would be needing to be doing to the suspension so, 120 k does seem a bit high.

but you never know.

Your original question was how much to walk out of a dealer with a 944 turbo S...

I must have missed the part where a Cayman S could be priced with options the factory doesn't offer...

In that case, don't forget the 911 GT2 motor swap, GT3 suspension components, and RUF-style fully integrated roll cage

very interesting !
Sadly, I was one of the idiots who paid nearly that for my car !! If I include lease payments I am way above ...
The cars came down the following year, when they were trying to fire sale them after the market crashed.. I understand they were going for 10k under what they orig listed for, BUT they were not optioned like the true S versions
Great info guys
Regards
Ed

I share your pain - I did the same thing with a Z06 Corvette back in late 2000.

Sometimes though, when you gotta have it... you gotta have it!

I know I've spent more than $50k for my 86' - bit thats a different problem!

Remember (I can, I am that old) that the exchange rate and inflation went to hell in the 80’s the in the US the 944 doubled in price in 4 years.

BTW – I wonder if I can get that fancy interior in the Porsche font but made out to say ‘Bite Me’ over and over….
