Default Advice needed Tapping sound '87 turbo

I jus bought my first Porsche, a 944 turbo and I love it. When I looked at it, It ran good and I did not notice any odd noises. I bought the car, and oops...when I first start it up it, there is an intermittant rattling sound coming from behind the timing cover about 6 or seven inches down from the distributor. It sounds like a tiny hammer pecking on the cover about every 4 to 5 seconds. As it warms up it gets better. The car has 138,000 miles, and supposably the timing belt was changed at 111,000 but no documentation...I will have to make the repairs myself, and I am a rookie. Any ideas on what this could be and any good DIY articles would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks in advance

What oil pressure are you seeing? I would make sure the oil level is OK and change the oil and filter as a starting point. Sounds like a lifter noise to me.

Oil pressure guage is really good, 4 to 6 on guage. I put a stethascope on timing cover and is about 6 to 8 inches dwn from the distributor.....no bad tapping coming from the lifter areas on valve cover... Oi level good also...

I would pull off the timing belt cover and look around the balance shaft area .
You will need these..

Should I just buy the balance shaft belt and timing belt kits and get it over with?

If you don't have the full service history of the belts and rollers - then Yes! the age of the belts and rollers is as important as the mileage. The last ‘belt job’ may have been just the belt and not the rollers and tensioners….those are what really cause the problems.
