That sucks man!

My bet is a couple badly scored cylinder walls.
I had an engine with three scored walls one was wicked bad and that engine only smoked under heavy load, but would consume a fair bit of oil all the time. It also would smoke on startup briefly. None the less would run hard...... needless to say I was shocked how bad it was when I opened it up

good luck with your decision

Sorry to hear this man...I know the feeling. Good luck with either route you decided to take. Built once and build right...

Yeah, if the motor gets opened up it seems a shame to leave it as a 2.5 liter. However, the costs involved in opening up the motor and building it are prohibitive. I'm also afraid of doing this whole motor build and still having problems.

Putting in the LS1 will give me the hp I want, with more torque and more reliability for probably less money.

I'm waiting to hear back from the shop on what exactly they think is wrong and quotes to build the motor, then I'll make my decision.

Everything on this car was bad. So I'm pissed at myself for buying it, pissed at the totally incompetent fools (Munks Motors in Michigan) who did the PPI and beginning to get pissed at the seller, as so much is wrong with the car that it's hard for me to think that he didn't realize it.

In the last 5 months since owning the car I've replaced:
Oil pan gasket, rod bearings, timing belt and tensioner (tensioner was shot, timing belt was dangerously loose), motor mounts, throttle cable, rebuilt 3 axles, replaced 1 wheel bearing, clutch (!!), headlight relay, charged the A/C twice (it still doesn't work), turbo rebuilt, 30mm rear torsion bars, on and on.

With the exception of the front struts there isn't a thing on this car I haven't touched. The above list doesn't include installing my safety gear (Cobra seats, welded rollbar, 6 point harnesses and QR momo steering wheel) and ripping out the sub par safety crap that was in the car.

With the amount I've spent and will spend to either fix the motor or drop in an LS1 I think I could've bought the 996 GT3 I was looking at last February instead. That's a very depressing thought....

Damn that's really unfortunate and I feel for ya... sometimes cars really are just cursed

FWIW you could have easily just gotten yourself a cursed GT3. A friend of mine has had his taken apart and put back together so many times in the last 7-8 months for odd random issues it's not funny. At least the 951 is cheaper to put back together.

I'm not really a fan of LSx swaps (IMO it kinda destroys the original character of the car) but sounds to me like the only way you'll recover peace of mind with this car is to go that route.

Yeah, everything is a gamble, but the GT3 was prepped and had been run consistently vs this car sitting and needing race prep etc.

Just for laughs I'll call Lindsey Racing and see how much a short block costs.

You have that info online. Unless if you want to make changes on the stock block(~2000 + shipping).

Still a lot to talk about with Lindsey, for instance, they say it's "optional" to have them assemble the blocks. So they're just going to send out a bunch of parts then?

You are right. I just saw $1200 extra for them to assemble it.

Hmm, not so appealing now vs having the local shop rebuild the motor themselves or doing an LS1 swap...

ironic, that is $3200 for:

either a stock SHORTBLOCK 2.5 ...... or a complete LONGBLOCK LS6 405hp

Hell I think you even get a warranty on the LS6

think about it Doc.
