The vr6 makes a lot more sense than the cayenne 6 for anything other than PCA.
THe 12v has a huge aftermarket following that is also very cheap to work on. The 24v has a much better following now a days and HPA makes kits that can take you to over 450 whp easy, though very pricey.
A vr6 really does sound very sexy though.
Here's a video of USP swapping a vr6 turbo engine into a b5 s4 that came with a 2.7 liter turbo stock.

I looked some more and here's a video of it making over 800 whp. This swap sounds like it would enable the 944 to really have any amount of power we desired just about, transmission and wallet willing, etc.

I'm a huge Vr6 fan. Its one of the most unique motors every produced. I"ve done 5 or 6 vr6 swaps (in other vw's) over the years. I sold my swapped vw truck vr6 for my current 951 and really miss that motor. Its bullet proof and sounds incredible. I still do swaps for people but would love to put one in a 944. What does the kit come with? Motor mounts, trans adapter....?

I must be the only one who thinks the VR6 sounds pissweak? Perhaps there are aftermarked exhausts that make it sound better, but to me it sounds gutless.

There's a guy from the Canary Islands on Reutterwerk that detailed his Audi 5-cyl build. His build required SIGNIFICANT modification of the firewall for the engine to fit. And he wound up using the Audi transmission instead of the Porsche transaxle. I'll try to dig up the link in a bit. Regardless, I think this swap would be cost prohibitive for what you get. I'll be keeping my eye out for the first person that decides to go this route.

Also check under the user name Vonov. He's doing a VR6 transplant and it's well documented.

Yeah it's funny but it really just doesn't do it for me. Something incongruous about that sound coming out of a VW hatchback too. Just looks weird to my ears if you get my meaning. I like the Audi however. Amazing power and the sound is better somehow, but that guy seems to struggle with shifting. Can't believe it's stock transmission. Wonder if that includes the clutch? Nice pipework too.
I think the VR8 would be a good candidate though, as it's so narrow. Plenty of room for other stuff to be added.

Funny, i don't think i've ever heard a VR6 before today. They don't sound too bad.
It's probably just because by the time they start making noise i'm 10-12 cars ahead of them.

If that sound was never associated with a volkswagen, and the engine was, say, in a Lotus, or a Porsche (as it is now with the Cayenne) people would have a different opinion of it.
