Default Smog testing a Vitesse stage 2

Hey all,

I've shot Vitesse an email, but figured I'd check with the "collective" as well.

What have you guys done to get the car pass emissions with the stage 2 kit? Did you have to lean it out or otherwise play with it?

Or just put a cat in it, get it nice and hot and it'll pass fine?

I leaned out mine some and it passed no problem. I had the newer stage 2 though. I don't know how much that matters.

I think mine is one of the newer ones too, I have the vflex software, map sensor, etc.

You leaned it out with the SMT6? All across the board or just certain cells?

What is your emissions testing there? Idle and 20MPH or something else?

I ended up playing with my main pump gas tune ALOT. Every tune is different and unique to your setup that John calibrated for you. I just leaned it out to where my idle was touching 15s. I didn't have to do a rolling test because, of the cars age I think. He just stuck a sniffer in the pipe and called it a day.

You really shouldn't have any problems passing smog as long as you are leaned out okay. General rule I followed was 14's at crusing and 12's wot and then 11's on boost with WOT. Yes I tested each cell and played around with quite alot of them but, honestly that was mostly so I could learn it.

The car's tune was a little rich at WOT and alot rich at idle when it came to the stock tune.

I have to pass a load dyno test, so they basically drive the car on the dyno with the sniffer in the tail pipe.

Well depending on gear and speed that could be a range in RPM. 14's not in boost is fine and lean enough you should pass. I'd just make sure every cell above 2.5k. Yes I used the SMT6. Its really easy to work with and a great system.

Albeit after John explained things to me.

i don't have the turbo, but have the MAF (w/ piggyback) and passed fine in TX a few weeks ago with no cat. I don't have to get on a dyno - it's a two stage idle (one at 800RPM and another at 2500RPM) and passed with flying colors. I just made sure on the piggyback that I had it reading in the mid 14's at idle all the way up through 2500RPM and didn' thave any issues. I have a SFR 3" exhaust, Tial WG and no cat installed.

Were you guys using the stock AFM and stock airbox (I assume)? Very curious, because I have to get mine smogged in the next couple weeks. I actually have the car up on blocks right now to put the stock exhaust back on, then I was going to put the stock AFM/airbox back on too...

I've passed smog 3 times now with stock injectors, AFM/airbox and Guru chips. I don't have a way of measuring A/F ratio right now, so I'm not sure I can effectively tune things (tried with the SMT-6 logging the O2 sensor, but that hasn't worked out too well). I'd sure like to get things set up so I don't have to be tearing things off and re-installing again - that that it's tough, I'm just extremely time-limited these days...

Any tips/suggestions would be very much appreciated!!!

before getting too worked up about a "sniffer tune" you may want to have it checked as is..... you may just find that you are good. Is there a specific problem if it fails and has to be retested?

John puts some pretty nice stuff together, I would not be the least bit surprised if it passed with a good base tune if your engine is in good condition

Sniffer tests are nothing. You should be able to pass even without a cat. The dyno load/sniffer tests are another deal entirely...

Yeah, CA dyno sniffer is a real pain. I have the LR 340 kit and I had to put a big fat cat on it and retard the timing to fqs #4 to lower my N0x.... Cali guys, you gotta have a 'guy' that can let you run a couple test tries to see what your ballpark is. With 3" exhaust, there was no way I was gonna pass without a big universal converter.. Good luck to everyone...;-)

Yeah Greg, but you're going to have to pass emissions again next year. Pray it's just the sniffer in the tail pipe vs the dyno test. My old 951 passed the sniffer test without a cat with flying colors.
