Default 951S Ratios

Anyone know if there were gear ratio options on the cars when new? Was reading an old article by Road & Track that mentioned in 1988 customers could specify?

No, no option. Standard AOR transmission, same ratios as any standard 951.

There was an 88 Turbo S tested in Car & Driver that had an 3.89 R/P installed. Regardless of what the article implied, that would not have been done by the factory. It would have been a dealer installed 944S r/p, which would have eventually failed. The S2 3.88 r/p was not available until 89.

What source shows options, and what are the options shown?

Also, you asked about Turbo S trans ratios. The Turbo S is from 88 only. Now you mention checking your VIN, but your signature indicates you own an 89 and a 91 cab. Which car are you actually asking about?

The 89T would have also come with an AOR trans. The RoW 91 may have had optional LSD and Cooler, since the factory started reducing standard equipment after the 89 model year production run.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/

Clarks Garage has all the information you ever need on trannys. Ratio's, code numbers, on what and where in the world. Do a site search for Transmission.

Jim,

Thanks I also have an 88 with the turbo "S" option. Dealer says it shwos the AOR trans like the 89. But when they look up the vin it shows 3 options. My 91 car does not have the cooler or LSD. But it is the 88 I was concerned with.

There is no such thing as an AOR tranny without cooler or LSD. Unless someone has rebuilt it and taken the good parts out of it, which makes little sense. I would check the stamping on the housing to see what you really have.
