Hey guys. I found (and purchased) an '86 951 that's been sitting in a barn for the past 3-3.5 years. It has 151k on the odometer. The owner also had the complete set of Porsche workshop manuals that he gave me, too. This was a very pleasant suprise. I had been planning on purchasing a set. I would really appreciate input from seasoned enthusiasts/mechanics on what needs to be done since the car has been sitting idle for this amount of time. I'm now the second owner of the car and have in my possession all receipts/paperwork since the car was purchased new. I just don't know what should be flushed out, replaced, etc. that could have gone bad over the time of storage. Any info is greatly appreciated.

timing and balance belts first and foremost! Fuel, oil, engine seals, coolant, do a water pump while you're doin the belts to be on the safe side. fuel filter, oil filter (obviously) and you should be set for a long while.

plugs out put a few liters of crc in the plug holes come back the next day turn it by hand for a while .drop coollant and put water and coolant flush in.
get 2 or 3 good batteries or a jumper set up crank it for ages until you see some oil pressure .
plugs in start it bring it up to temp then drop the fluids . then put mineral oil in and change it after 300k's then 500 ks then 800ks then see where your at ..
get the front covers off check the condition of the belt's and rollers
try move the rollers try to rip the belt's if you can you have just saved an engine from certain death.
unplug every thing you can spry it with CRC then wiggle it back on.

Great find and welcome to Rennlist. Check out www.clarks-garage.com for instructions on most common repair procedures. I'd start by changing the timing belt, because if the belt breaks the valves will crash into the pistons -- not good. I'd also change the oil, coolant, cap, rotor, points, plugs, wires and air/oil/fuel filters. Also be sure to check for fuel leaks under the hood -- the fuel lines are prone to leak onto the headers and burn up the car. Might want to drain the tank and replace the gas while you're at it. Make sure to check the the basic safety items too before driving it: brakes, steering, tires, lights, brake lights, etc... Good luck and have fun!

Sounds good to me unless the engine block is cracked or major frame damage. Good luck and be sure to use this forum and clarks garage before spending money on someone else doing repairs. You can save a lot of money that way. If I can r/r a head, oil pump and such just about anyone can.

Sounds like an excellent score RedDragon!
few items -
drain the fuel, & cahnge fuel filter immedaitely
you definitely don't want the old of fuel through fuel system any more than already there.
Oil change also.
Then if you get it to run don't drive it until belts are serviced. No reason to do belts until you find out what major problems it may have.
Did you find out why it was parked in the first place? There is always a reason, minor or major, there will be a real reason

Deja vu! I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago. And as folks told me.....PICTURES!
Anyway, plan on replacing anything rubber, and all fluids. As Chris said, it'll take a lot to get it running again.

I plan on utilizing this forum, the garage site and the manuals I got with the car. I've been in the mobile audio business for 20+ years. I'm an authorized JL Audio and Hybrid Audio Technologies Dealer. Fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc. If anyone needs high-end custom fabricated items, I'd be happy to offer my services. My custom enclosures are all over the country. Since I now have a 951 to pattern after, I'll be able to offer one-off A-pillar mounts for mids/highs, custom subwoofer enclosures, etc. Just let me know if I can be of service.

Putting some oil in the cylinders first was a great suggestion. You do not want a broken ring. Gently rock the crank back and forth a few degrees to let the oil work in and free the rings from the cylinder walls. Let the oil sit while you do other things.
Drain the gas, send the injectors to be cleaned, change the fuel filter, inspect the belts, change the oil and filter of course.
Flush the brake fluid and get some new tires before you drive it much. They are probably hopelessly flatspotted.
