Default Bought an E39 M5, keeping the 951, going back to stock

Hey Guys,

Its been a while since I've posted here. I bought an e39 m5 in July of last year and have been spending most of my time on m5board. I originally thought I would sell the 951 but recently decided to keep it as my daily driver in order to keep the miles down on the e39. I never resolved the problems created by the previous owner on the 951, but now that I have some more DIY experience I feel confident I can get the car to pass smog and drive well without throwing thousand$ at it. The car currently has LR exhaust (incl cat), chip, some sort of b.s. K&N hot air intake and a manual boost pressure reg. I have the stock airbox and exhaust so will be re-installing those along with a new o2 sensor, possibly new plugs, new brake pads, and new tires. I miss driving this car and I am really excited to get it running correctly. I am looking for a stock chip for an '87 951, stock boost pressure reg, and any tips on maintenance items that will improve driveability and smog #'s.

Thank you!
-Will

Pics?

y'know, according to jeremy clarkson, the air coming out of the tailpipe is actually cleaner than the air going in in large polluted cities. for a 968 at least, but i assume the 944/951 will be the same.

Lol, I knew that was going to be a response. I don't have good pics of the 951 on this computer, just this rough one from Laguna Seca. I'll post more after work. How about my questions? What do you guys think? Does it sound like a good plan?

The problem is it fails smog miserably, "the worst car I've ever tested" according to the local smog tech. My question is, does returning the car to stock sound like a good investment for a daily driver/track car (I know strange mix). Also, does anyone have a stock chip for sale? What maintenance items should I look to address first to improve chances of passing smog? Thanks.

i don't live in cali, but if it's really the worst car he's ever tested, there's something wrong. when they do emissions in texas, the 951 usually reads extremely clean, to the point that i've had them tell me before they thought their machine was broken because it was almost not readable.

What board are you on? I have been looking for a good e39 board. I opted for the better mileage of the smaller one because we drive a lot of miles each year and the gas was very high. We drive to Calif. at least 7-8 times a year beyond our normal driving. I love it, but if I had it to do over again, I would go the the big one. When I update this one, it will be for the M.

Is it failing when it gets into boost? Could be a boost/vac leak or bad bov.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Both my Nox and CO2 readings were off the charts and the tech thought it was because the cat was not doing its job. I really just want to make the car reliable and smog so I can enjoy it somewhat hassle free. Unfortunately the 997tt is not mine, belonged to my dad, was traded in on a 997.2 GT3. Between the two, the GT3 was hands down my favorite. As for the question about the E39, I am a member on M5board.com (username CU'09). I believe they have sections for non-m e39s. I was just sitting in the 951 again today, boy do I miss that car! I need to get it back on the road. It has a LR exhaust which I will likely replace with stock, at least the cat, and a LR chip which I am considering replacing if it will help pass smog.

Spoolin951, isn't Le Mans blue an awesome color?! I love the different shades it takes in different lighting. Perfect M5 color in my opinion!
