Piston options?
Guys,
What are your opinions of the pistons currently available to us? I did a search but the old threads don't talk about much except Mahle and JE. I'm in need of a set of 100.5 and would like to know peoples experiences. This is my limited knowledge:
JE - Best price but they use 2618 alloy requiering more clearance resulting in piston slap.
Weisco - I don't know much about them.
Wossner - 4032 alloy. Good pricing. Seem to be popular with the 911 guys.
Mahle - 4032 alloy. Pricy! Considered the best on the market? Paying for the name or superior design?
Thanks!

well i did have a thread a few months ago that was "wossener V JE"
and it came out that JE's 2618 were possibly stronger but not really strength issues found with any of them .
they don't seem to be rattly with there recommended clearance.
For a standard dimension or close like 100.5 JE are great . but for any application with more changes like bowl CC valve pockets ring groove type ..
Wossener is the way to go apparently .
there where a few sets of discounted New mahles 100.5 kicking around not long ago ,,

Don't want to beat a dead horse but I think you want the piston alloy with the least amount of growth and a piston coating that is the most compatible with Alusil cylinder bores. I think Chris White recommends Wossner, although if you do a search I believe he also recommends a certain alloy. (I believe JE's are available in 2 different alloys).
I wish someone was making pistons with an iron "ferrite?" coating like the original pistons intended for Alusil bores.....

That was what I was thinking; cam ground I think is the term. Call me old fashioned ( I am old, damn) but like sleeved, moly rings and SwainTech coated. Did I mention I'm also a cheap skate?
Wossner would be nice (if not so cheap) and send to US Chrome for a do over.

Wössner pistons are made from Mahle raw material (since 1947). Even Mahle does not make pistons with ferrostan coatings anymore. Use of that stuff (very poisonous and can cause cancer) has been illegal in EU countries about 10 years.

Thanks for pointing that out. Apparantly my search skills are lacking. There was a TON of good info in there!
Thanks for all the input guys. I'm now definetly leaning towards Wossner. They seem to have great repuation with the top engine builders, they are the alloy I prefer, they have the right skirt coating, I can order them in the size I need (100.5mm x 25cc), and they're about 30% less expensive than Mahle.
