Default Need Advice on 951 Modifications

Hello; I've owned my 951 for about 1 year now and am starting to think about increasing the power by 50-75 HP, while keeping it all reliable and responsive at lower speeds. It will be street driven, but lately I've been really tempted to take a driving course and learn how to use the car better. Here's what I have:

'86 951 w/53,000 miles; LSD, Fuchs 7/8's, sport seats, Koni yellow non-adjustables.

Here's what I've done so far:

Maintenance items (belts, hoses, fluids, etc.), Boost Enhancer, Autothority chips, Marchal H4 headlamps, Momo wheel, purchased but haven't installed 26.9mm sway bar/new bushings and heim-jointed drop links for stock rear bar.

If possible, I'd like to be able to make modifications incrementally to spread-out the cost. If I have to ditch the boost enhancer and current chips for something better, that's OK. I have searched for and read dozens of past posts on the subject of modifying these cars but I need to know what will work best and the order of steps to take. Many thanks in advance!

You're better off saving up and doing something worthwhile, rather than do what most people do which is spend hundreds / thousands of $$ buying and installing stuff that you wind up taking off because it doesn't do what you want. You will save money in the long run. Save up and buy a reputable kit that will give you years of reliable enjoyment.

i agree with Zeff- first thing i did was install a Tial wastegate, adapters and a Lindsey Racing exhaust. THis upped hp at the rear wheels by about 30hp. Dynoed at 219.9rwhp. Then i went to 55lb injectors, 3bar regulator and a set of maxhp chips -also did the maxhp MAF at the same time and it was pretty darn quick after that. Dont think the MAF was necessary really- and i ended up swapping that for a Vitesse MAF and chip board eventually. Then bigger turbo etc... its a never ending cycle.

One thing I will say is I would NOT suggest a MAF.
If I started over I would either keep the stock turbo/AFM and add Vitesse chips or I would go big turbo and buy a Link stand-alone from CEP.

Just my opinion...

You illustrate my point perfectly Dan. You bought a bunch of stuff you along the way that in the end you didn't want. Most of us have done the same thing. Of course there are those small things that need to be bought that you mention too.

If we set a goal of an extra 50hp...you just know that this isn't going to be enough. For a very small % of people they're happy with 50hp. Save up and buy a VR kit or a CEP kit or whoever's kit. Get the possibility of an extra 100hp+. You don't have to use that power and it may take more improvements along the way but you won't have to tear out the whole system and start again.

true- only thing ive taken off to replace was the RB maf- it just wasnt big enough for my k27/8- still put down 359rwhp at 21lbs boost. Only reason i didnt buy the LR stuff first was the price. Nothing wrong with a kit though- its good to make sure you have matching components. If you know what you need though usually you can make the same mods without spending as much money.

I was in a similar boat... initially just wanted chips... I ended up thinking more about a specific price and power I was ok with. Ended up getting a 26/8, vitesse chips, test pipe, mbc, and a tial. That's all I'm ever gonna do with this particular car.

Do you want to add 50-70hp over what you have now or over stock? There is a big difference!

Plan what you want in the long term. It'll save you from purchasing new components now to replace them when you upgrade again. It's possible to purchase components that can be used now and you keep them as you add things for higher performance. It's always better to do it right the first time; the second time around is always more expensive as you will be paying twice.

I went with a Tial 38mm, Vitesse MAF/chips and Lindsey MBC...made a HUGE difference in my car. Not exactly a cheap upgrade though...about $2500 for all of that and a couple days worth of work installing.

Reliable and adding HP are at odds in these machines. You can have one or the other take my word for it. These are 20 year old cars and when you tweak them they break. If you are willing to upgrade them, have fun like the rest of us and go after it as their is nothing like driving a 400 hp 4 banger

In my opinion there are some basic parts that will help with your goals and will work with any future mods.
A good 3" exhaust, tial wastegate, MBC and WB02 are a must.
If the head gasket is original and you plan on running additional boost, it should be changed. After 20 plus years it will be corroded.
After that, if you are the type that will be satisfied with 50-60hp
increase, bolt on a Vitesse Kit. They are the best bar none.

If you are a boostaholic like alot of us, invest in a standalone
setup first.
