Default Turbocharger Nomenclature

I'm trying to decipher the Turbo "name game"

Example - Kokeln Stage V turbo.

Specs: TO4B, 60-1, Stage 5 (T-350), #8

Meaning ( I think ) : Turbonetics TO4B cold housing with a 60-1 (61#) compressor wheel - Turbonetics Stage 5 turbine (T-350 is the "style" of the turbine ?) inside a turbonetics made KKK #8 replica hot housing.

How did I do ?

Not Yet.

Full boost by 3000 RPM on most 2.0-2.3l motors and the ability to run over 40psi boost efficiently.

Since 034 makes primarily Audi stuff, then I'm 99% certain it won't bolt up. Audi turbos just hang from the exhaust manifolds and then have lines going to the oil/coolant hookups. Unlike the 951, which actually mounts on the oil return. If you read up about ball-bearing turbos on 951 you'll know why this is a problem and why it won't bolt up.

T04 is just one line of Garrett impellers. There is an E series, and a B series. The E series ones have trimes that are calculated from exducer and inducer diameters. E's are bigger, heavier, and can handle more boost than the B's. The B's I believe are a little older, and their differences are distinguished by letters.....up until the 60-1's (there is a TS04, which is about a 58mm, going off of memory). There is also a 62-1. I think those are the diameter of the inducer? The B series should spool faster, and are probably ideal for most of our engines. The E's are good for mid 20's PSI types of boost numbers.

Anyway, the "Stage" is their turbine side. The numbered ones are from their T3 series. Most of the time when you see them mixed (generally referred to as T3/T4 hybrids), they have State III's. Stage V is freakin' huge.

Regardless, this turbo is a monster. Hope you aren't thinking of putting this on a stock 2.5L.

"Regardless, this turbo is a monster. Hope you aren't thinking of putting this on a stock 2.5L."

Too late! It's been on there for about 6-7 years ! Put down ~320 to the wheels. But I would like the fastest spooling turbo that can hold 16 psi to redline and make 310 whp.

Anybody have the answer ?

dual ball bearing gt2871 would probably be an excellent choice for only 310 whp. Personally I'd love a ball bearing gt30r though as 310 whp just doesn't cut it for me, lol.

If you do change, you can make me a "family" deal on the Kokeln, I'll take it as a spare for the track car. And, it's not a stock 2.5 either.

Turbo nomenclature –

The ‘cold’ side in the front sucks the money in and the ‘hot’ side chews it up and spits it out the back.
When you run out of money it stops.
